Mudflaps - To fit or not to fit

With the winter weather truly upon us together with the crappy grime the council tends to spread at this time of the year on what passes for our roads; my question is are mudflaps worth the £300 + my local stealer has quoted me worth the investment on our 405? Will they help cut down on the grit especially, that's glueing itself to the lower panels.

They help a bit, although nowhere near as much as having side steps fitted! Fit side steps AND fudflaps and it really fixes the problem Thumbs Up

If you’re happy to fit them yourselves, you can buy either LR originals or aftermarket copies for substantially less than that!

Ask here for a price:

How easy are they to fit for someone who's not especially great with a spanner and socket set. I've tried googling fitting them but not much success?

It’s pretty simple, just awkward to get access to drill holes (!) with the wheels in place. I managed to combine getting the mud flaps fitted for free at the same time that I paid someone to fit the sidesteps; it’s not easy to fit the sidesteps without putting the car on a lift.

I fitted my own genuine mudflaps and found them to be a PITA tbh. Rear wheels have to come off for access but the fronts can just be turned. The hole drilling is not too eye watering and the kit comes with templates to enable accuracy. I copied the templates and cut them out so I could keep the instructions complete. The hardest part for me was to get the outer wing to line up with the wheel tub and inner wing panel and the mudflap. I spent hours trying and must have lost a few years off the other end with the frustration. I did it and they're fitted no differently than LR would have done but I'd say well worth the £150 fit charge to let them do it. I think I paid about £145 for the set. Just for your own sanity let LR do it!

I always have side steps and mudflaps for the reasons given. And I get the dealer to fit them because I am cack handed!

Horrid hateful things!!!

If you have to fit them but are anything else than 100% certain you want them? DONT drill holes in your car when fitting them! The holes through the bumper and wing panels will show if you decide (like i did) to remove them later on... TOP TIP! They can be fitted using the original holes/fixings and the sides can be stuck using a good quality double sided tape...

My car has paint protection film around the vulnerable areas (sills/bumper edges) that get chipped and thus far has worked well Thumbs Up

I’m of the opinion they look awful on any of the LR range except a defender. But function over style may rule the head.

I bought a full set and proceeded to fit front ones first. after a couple of hours rolling round on a cold hard drive I finally had the fronts fitted. it took me a week for my knees and hips to recover as its such a god awfully awkward job to do. The rear ones however didn't affect my joints at all, they are still in the bag they came in. Agueroooooooooo. 93-20
I swear you will never see anything like this ever again....watch it..drink it in.

Get them fitted by your local garage.

Here they are. Would not be without them, they stop most of the splash from mud etc.....

the L405 mudflaps are much better looking than the 'flappy big ear' type of the L322..

Thanks everyone for your replies. Given that I have a less than stellar record at DIY, the dealer route it is. Ordered for fitting on Thursday in time for the white stuffs arrival.

I my experience it might be worth checking the ones you fit on the front are flexible. The ones that came with my car were pretty rigid and kept getting ripped off as the front wheel dropped over an obstacle, they do reduce that immediate clearance considerably on the front. The replacement ones I've had fitted from Britpart are much more pliable so I foresee no issues.
