4.2 vs 4.4 economy

Hi all you have probably seen I’m seriously considering the upgrade to the 4.2

Is there much if any difference in economy for everyday driving between the Bmw 4.4 and the 4.2? Both on petroleum and lpg?

Also random side question do all of the 4.2 have the newer design air cylinder under the driver side to allow deplorable steps? Current stable:
2006 BMW M6
2007 4.2 V8 S/C FF
Gone:
2002 4.4 V8 FF

I can't answer your second question about the air cylinder, but we updated from a 2002 4.4 to a 2007 4.2 SC and do not see any difference driving the same routes we drove in the 4.4 in the same style (i.e. not booting it).

When towing, the 4.2 returns slightly better economy on a good run.

(This is all on petrol)

Cheers Thumbs Up

Cannot comment on a back to back 4.4 v 4.2 comparison.
These engines don't rev very high normally so my theory is I always use high octane fuel (petrol) to maximise combustion burn efficiency. Since owning the car Ive always used Shell V-Power, being retired does help in this area.

Around town its normally 10 -12 mpg @30mph, with frequent stop / starts.
On a run about 15-17mpg @ 50-70mph on de-restricted A roads, also, I don't do any towing.

Driving the same sort of routes in the same way...I found the 4.2 about 1 mpg better than the 4.4 and the 5.0 is about 1 mpg better than the 4.2. Given the significant increases in power between engines that's a bit counter-intuitive but it is real. The issue is you only achieve that by not indulging your right foot too often... Mike - MPx
