L322 CV gaiter replacement

Hi, I need to replace the OSF brake end front driveshaft gaiter and want to know how to do it.

I have successfully managed to change the pig of a lower ball joint today but during all the bashing I knicked the gaiter.

To replace the gaiter do I just need to split the 3 tapered joints, (lower arm, upper arm, and track rod), snip the two metal clamps and then pull the strut towards me hoping the half shaft will come out of the cv joint? I may need to remove the caliper as well but not sure. What I'm hoping is that I don't need to remove the front hub etc.

any advice most welcomingly received.

Simplest way is to undo big Knut holding driveshaft on hub undo top bush bolt to allow hub to swivel knock driveshaft through hub .You can buy neoprene gaiters that slip over cv joint with the aid of a cone and lots of grease a bit fiddly but saves a lot of time .Messy job but has to be done .Hope this helps

Hi, thanks for that. Is the hub/driveshaft nut a b**** to get off or manageable, ie does it need a windy gun or will a long breaker bar do the trick?

I used a long breaker bar and a scaffolding pole with all my weight on it best done with car still on the ground getting the shaft out can aso be a bit of a chore but perseverance will overcome it .R

When I do halfshafts, I usually remove the wheel centre then use the weight of the car and "Park" / Handbrake to provide the resistance for releasing the nut. .

Yeh I agree pay the £150 it's a swine and you could get it wrong and end up costing more

Success - but not how I'd planned.

Some background: the car is in France where I have a good selection of tools but not anything man enough to remove the hub nut without risk of damage (new torque multiplier in UK).

So I set about removing the upright with a view of taking out the driveshaft and upright in one go (minus disc and caliper). All was going well until one of the bolts attached to the strut was seized solid, and it was properly solid. Umm, so after much annoyance I undid the strut and took it and the driveshaft out in one.

Managed to split the driveshaft from the disc end cv joint after quite a few hits (had thought this was going to come off much easier), new gaiter fitted, re-packed with moly grease and hey presto. After some man-handling I got everything put back together.

So car all tested, no issues, and the car is ready to drive back to the UK from the Alps on Monday. There was a point yesterday I thought that our new Hilux was coming back instead but dead chuffed its all resolved.

Now off to going skiing in 15+ dregee temps!
