Battery Disconnect/Towbar Electrics.

2003 Vogue with BMW Infotainment system.

I'm about to install the towbar electrics using a Westfalia 2 x 7-pin dedicated kit which is "plug & play".

I've read conflicting information about disconnecting the battery negative terminal & iut seems that I should ;

1) Turn off the ignition, wait for 5 minutes & then remove the key. (keep it on me, not in the car).

2) Wait another 5 minutes & then disconnect the battery negative terminal.

3) Plug in towbar electrics.

4) Reconnect battery negative terminal & wait 5 minutes.

5) Key in ignition & start,

Have I missed anything ?

Sorted - followed the above & apart from a couple of warnings which cleared after a short drive all seems to be in order.

Next job - pick up feed in overhead consule for dashcam. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

Thanks for the info' - I did find that via Google but I just wanted to double check as the towbar electrics instructions just said to "disconnect the battery" with no reference to allowing systems to shut down.

All working except that the dedicated electrics do not like the LED indicator lights on the trailer (flashing too fast & a warning on the dash) - I'll sort that out with a couple of load resistors. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

Load resistors will stop the fast flashing but won't stop the lights flashing as the ECU fires out its 2v bulb test pulse. You might not want your brake lights flashing randomly. I believe there is an aftermarket interface to cure this, you can stop it with relays. The testing might be stopped with diagnostics. I put it down as too hard and change the lamps to old school. 2007 TDV8 VSE

I very much doubt if the LED's will react at all to 2v - IIRC the units are rated at 9 > 36volts.

The whole reason to change the trailer to LEDs was to save time replacing bulbs as they were forever failing due to vibration.

The issue is the led`s will light up with a small voltage where the normal bulbs won't. The test system fires out 2v which will illuminate the bulb being tested and cause a flash. 2007 TDV8 VSE
