That's what I thought but then I keep reading EGR's can't be blanked on the 4.4 and so I'm wondering if the ECU somehow compensates?

If the ERG flow is restricted - I'm interested to know would this affect rate of DPF fill?

So responsiveness and performance would be affected would you say Graeme?
Possibly economy too?
What about soot output (to my question about DPF).

Soot levels...
I tend to think that it probably does increase soot levels.
My thinking being..
Mine used to be much lower levels every time I checked live values until about 18 months ago when I started to see much higher levels more often.
So I assume the gradual build up of grime in the inlet track is in part responsible.
Having said that I still find that a good motorway run once a month or so drops the soot level back into low single figures, and I have never had an actual DPF warning, mainly because as soon as I see 17.5g I do a good burn run.

Interesting Mike, I'm still trying to understand the root cause of soot / DPF fill.

I haven't opened up my intake system but will be doing it soon now!!

Keen to hear all thoughts on this.

The only real proof will be if you last longer between Active regens for similar driving conditions.
At the moment it takes me 4 to 6 weeks of stop- start town driving to get from 2.5g to 17.5g , but I tend to do at least 1 decent run a month which extends the gap a bit.
I tend to think 1 good burn per tank full is normal for my usage.
If I find them needed more frequently, then I will bite the bullet and strip it all down for a good clean out.

Yes you're right Mike. I'm reaching 17.5g or even 20g for every tank of fuel. i.e. I'm having to do a regeneration per tank. Some tanks I don't get out of town so I can't get a 'natural' region within my tank cycle.

I accidentally filled with Shell Ultra (or whatever it's called) and out of interest I wondered if I might get longer reaching 17.5g. At the moment I still have some of this tank left but it's looking like the grams are climbing at the same rate. So this I think eliminates premium fuels as a fix/improvement. And since premium fuels just have more additives, I also tend to think this proves additives would not help.

I have tried putting additives in just after topping up, but found over a 4-5 month trial period they make no noticeable improvement , but I do always use supermarket standard diesel.

I went to Tenerife for four weeks in February, so when I got home I couldn’t wait to get it out of my garage and go for a good run.
I immediately thought wow!! this thing certainly has still got more than enough power for me, so I don’t think the build up of crud affects performance very much, and although I am not fanatical about checking mpg, I do know that every time I fill up I reset the trip and it always shows just over 500 miles range , so mpg has not changed over at least the last 3years of usage.

Yes, every time.
I reset it so 500 miles would be tank range, calculated using mpg over previous 3/4 tank usage.
I always brim it and refill when range gets below 100 miles.

I went to North Wales for a weekend away last week and it averaged 32mpg overall over the 250 mile round trip.

500 miles is very good Mike. But I'm not sure the miles remaining is accurate at all.

I go lower than you, brimmed full and run down to 25 miles remaining, orange light on.
Which, when I fill is usually 85-87 litres back in.

On that basis, my range is a bit like this

All city tank: 300
Mixed city and m-way 400
All m-way 500
