This morning with a cold engine I was able to check the level without opening bonnet and doing the double cruise control click.
I thought that was not possible?
It wouldn't let me check it after a 30mile run into work after switch off which is right

Both are right.
You can check the oil level before starting the engine, ie cold.
You are not able to check the oil level after running the engine until at least 20 minutes after stopping the engine.

If you want to check level immediately after running engine, you can do so by opening bonnet, getting the “oil level not available “ message, then double clicking the C C cancel button.
The level should then be displayed.

Yes, that is the correct method to check the level., ie bonnet closed, but before starting the engine.
Just don’t put your foot on the brake pedal.

I check mine first thing in the morning whilst car is still in garage because my drive is on an incline and garage is only level area.
I re-check it warm occasionally if I am on a flat car park.

when checking oil level on the cold engine, oil level should be in the middle or one notch above. this way when you get engine to the working temperature oil lave will be one or two notches below max and that is correct level. do not overfill.
