Mass Airflow Sensor

Hello folks,

Had a little issue with a split intercooler hose recently, within 18 months of the last time. And the same side so questionable quality on these LR originals.

However, the engine light returned and restricted performance warning popped up. Surprisingly, the performance wasn’t restricted and after getting it checked out by a local Indy, MAF sensor was pointed out as the root cause. The Indy quoted £128 fitted, reasonable I thought.

That was until I thought I could do this myself and asked for a price from Dan at Duckworths. The price came back at £165, which I initially thought was for both but did seek clarification. To my surprise, it’s £165 for just one of the sensors from LR. Has anyone had any experience with using non LR MAFs such as by VDO or Continental which come in at 1/2 the price? Would be good to know if non LR are a false economy or genuine saving

I am also wondering exactly what was the Indy going to replace with?

Thanks Range Rover Vogue SE 2010

You have to do the numbers

The ones you have, assuming they are originals have lasted @ 9 years.

After market ones or the LR ones you pays your money and takes your choice.

Will after market ones do the same job? They may provide good service, they may not, but if you replace like for like you have only spent what you would have done in the first place with LR.

How long do you intend to keep the car ? See first item above.... .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Very fair point on the fact the first one has lasted 9 years.

To date have always used genuine LR replacement parts, but as is often argued on this site, LR don’t make everything in house. Hence checking if someone has had any experience with OEM non LR MAFs.

Have had the car 4 years, first RR and love it, preference is to keep it. Or at least until I can upgrade to an L405 Very Happy Range Rover Vogue SE 2010

Gotcha.
Hoses - haven't a few people here gone to silicone hoses on the 3.6?
MAF - maybe your Indy has worked out which one he can sub - or is using a non-original? (Not necessarily a bad thing given your hose issue!)

. Cheers, Greg

To be fair I didn’t ask if an original LR part would be used, but given the value of the quote it would certainly indicate non original. Will book it in and get it changed, nothing more unnerving then staring at an engine light Shocked
Even though it has cleared itself and returned a couple of times with no noticeable difference to the drive.

Ref hoses, will definitely try the silicone versions next time round. They certainly put some color in the engine bay

My 3.6 keeps throwing a fault and going into restricted mode. It was a daily occurance and turning it off and back on again cleared it. I changed the top hoses to silicone even though I couldn't see any faults with the old rubber ones. it was fine for three days and then faulted again. It wasn't every day though so I thought I'd solved it.

I took the drivers side heat shield off last Wednesday to see if the inlet manifold was cracked. I couldn't get it off completely so i refitted it due to time constraints. Then surprisingly it didn't fault for 4 days and then failed twice last night in one 30 mile journey.

Im going to ask my Indy to plug it in as I'm getting tired of it now. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Why not try a MAF aerosol cleaner first?, what have you got to lose. Do a search online, also there are "how-to" vids on you tube. I cleaned the one on my octy' vrs and it did run smoother Thumbs Up

An update on the engine light and restricted performance warning, which doesn’t restrict performance?? Was compelled to do 500 mile round trip to drop a relative off, the performance restriction light came and disappeared numerous times despite cruising at a steady 80+ there and back.
Not a relaxed drive by any stretch, given the engine light stayed on. On return removed and cleaned the MAP and MAP sensors, all 4 looked relatively clean, but cleaner now. No gunk or soot on MAP’s like I have seen on a few vids on YouTube.
So bit the bullet and bought an IID tool (thanks Dan) to check root cause before I booked it in with a mechanic.
Fault code ‘P140A-21 Exhaust gas recirculation Sensor C - circuit low - General signal failure - signal amplitude <minimum’
Look this up on the site and similar codes reported requiring replacement EGR valve?
The live values don’t show any restrictions to the valves opening and closing. Idle values at 18%

Probably a dumb question, but don’t suppose it is just a sensor that can be replaced as the per the fault code? Would be good to know before I take my medicine and part with £1500 Big Cry

3.6 mate.

Have used Rovertune many times and they have been great in the past. They don't however appreciate honest feedback if it is slightly negative. They certainly didn't like being questioned for charging to fix an issue following some work they did and which was still under guarantee.

In fact, didn't bother calling me back when I asked to book a diagnosis. Also missed reporting some issues following a main service that you would expect. I think its a case of captive market arrogance, plus charging nearly £100+VAT p/hr is not exactly cheap. Range Rover Vogue SE 2010

Hi KRV24,

Have a look at the numbers on the old AFM. Is there a number like 5WK97011Z? If there is, I think you'll find VDO/Continental, (same company) are the actual manufacturer of the OE part.

Hi Sandy,

Thanks, it doesn’t appear to be a MAS issue, no errors on IID tool for this. The P140-21 is an EGR related issue. So happens the engine light has gone out again but the error is still there. Even stranger non of the live values show any issues??

Would be good to know if anyone has experienced anything similar and the fix?
