4.2 SC - Copious amount of steam on start-up

Hi, it stops once the engine is warm. Using about 1-2 pint of coolant per week. No sign of any cross contaminant.
Any help gratefully received before I head for another huge bill please. Range Rover 4.2 SC
2 Range Rover Classics - one from new but both rusty now.
Rover 3.5 Coupe had since new.
Subaru Legacy 3.0.

Get a sniffer test done. Cheap and easy at your local garage. It'll point to exhaust gases in the coolant, ergo, possible head gasket problems. 2017 5.0 Autobiography Supercharged

It might be worth taking the plugs out and having a look to see if any are steam cleaned or rusty

If you are loosing coolant and steam is coming out of the exhaust on start up it's likely you have a head gasket problem.
Coolant is being sucked into the cylinders during the induction part of the cycle and expelled through the exhaust.
The steam out of the exhaust appears to disappear after a while due to the increased temperature as the engine warms which means the steam doesn't condense. Takes me back to my yoof when I had a mini that did exactly the same. Fitting a new head gasket cured the problem.

We had similar problem at first, which then led to an over heat problem.

head gaskets is where i am at now..

this is what you will end up looking at.

im also re-setting all my valve clearences while im at it, this part is taking the longest getting the damn tappets sorted.

@matthughes86 what's access like for what you are doing? I've always thought if I have to go that deep I would take the whole engine out.

Kezbo,

i have took the whole rad system out inc air con rad,

due to that access isnt so bad, there are a couple of annoying things to work round and twist a wrist or two like the alternator and the air con pump, but ok to work round.

some of the stuff at the back is a pain but i found just standing/sitting on the block sorted that out...

i just want my tappets so i can start the rebuild properly starting to forget where bits went.....

incase you wondered out of the 32 tappets im having to change around 26-28 of them
