Rear Tailgate strap rust

Hi folks,

My tailgate straps are showing rust (god knows how bad it is under the rubber) I have seen some threads previously about replacing them with the later gas arm thingees.

Is that the only option? If so, please can I get some hints and tips. Also, how do I remove the rust stains from paint work as shown in the picture below? (This is on the left hand side.

Could replace with another strap but wondering if damper would be better. Current:

I don’t think the damper supports anything, just slows it down opening, so you will still need straps, plus there is only a single damper used, just on the right side, when it’s fitted at the factory.

I’d just replace with new ones....maybe T Cut on the paint?

I’m not aware there is an upgrade for the straps? Have I missed something?

Just realised you already have the damper fitted.... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Think they come standard on 2011 MY. The wee strut is on the right side lower tailgate.

The mod strap has a fitting on the top for the strut and you drill two holes at the bottom to attach it to the bracket.

Replace the straps, they will fail if rusting. See the various threads on here (Stan got dumped on the deck when his failed).

If you have not got a damper but are fitting one, make sure you get the correct straps. Cheers

Cheers Richard, I was wondering if there was any greater benefit of adding the strut other than the booth not banging hard and coming down slowly. Not really keen on drilling holes, especially after some folk report the screws went loose after a short while. Current:

Hi Scot

Mine came with the damper fitted, not sure if I'd fit one otherwise. Cheers

I have had both, but was always happy with earlier Td6 with no strut.
I wouldn’t bother retro fitting.

Retro fitted on two FFRR's - just enjoyed the damped drop of the tailgate. No issues with screws coming loose, I tapped the holes I made so the set screws (bolts) are held nicely in place. Otherwise make smaller holes and use self tapping screws .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Replaced both straps last month. Didn't bother with the damper. Don't really see the need for it. Just lower it by hand. One of the new ones had a nipple on it for the damper.

Re the rust, a mild solution of oxalic acid will remove surface rust like that. John

Mine were seized when I first bought it years ago, when removed the cable was fine and the crimp, it was just the bush that spins that had rusted and from memory theres some plastic mixed in somewhere.

I applied some heat to free them off then covered them in grease and refitted with the rubber caps back over. They have been fine ever since and the lower tailgate can go for weeks without being dropped. Current

DON'T buy the cheaper cables, the covering cracks and splits and cables rust for fun in 5 mins, even though I'd dunked em in grease! I'll be replacing em AGAIN soon before they snap but with original parts! 2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.

I used to be indecisive and have a split personality... but we are ok now...I think?
