Whine/drone when slowing to a stop - any ideas?

I'm hearing a feint whine/low drone which happens when slowing down but usually just before coming to a stop.

I initially thought it could be a light brake pad squeal however the sound continues after the car is at a standstill.

The sound is intermittent both when it occurs and how long it lasts when it does occur.

It sounds a bit like a bearing noise but I don't think it's engine speed related as it doesn't vary if I rev the engine.

I've listened around the engine bay but can't seem to hear it there.

It's not the sat/nav or dash fans as those I can hear distinctly.

It also occurs whether the air con is on or not and seems more audible when the windows are closed than when open.

Any thoughts on what it could be would be much appreciated.

and it is not coming from the passenger seat ? .

It's one of those eliminating jobs I'm afraid. You just need to switch things on / off in a sequence, stationary / moving to find it.
Sounds like it's nothing rotating with the engine, as no increase with engine speed.

Ha, the passenger seat whine self cured by moving out - long drives are much improved since.

My current suspicion is the slowing to a stop whine is possibly coming from the gearbox or possibly diffs or transfer case? I was able to get the noise to stop and start by moving the shifter from D to P to D. I also think I can 'feel' the whine on the gear shifter.

I was planning to replace the gearbox filter, transfer case and front and rear diff oils anyway so I'm hoping that either cures it or uncovers what may be the cause. Will also do the mechatronic service bits on the gearbox while the sump is off.

I would check transfer box, especially alignment of any props. They do have a shelf life and a oil change may well cure it.

Thanks dolphinboy. Can you advise how I would check the alignment of props?

The car has done 79k miles by the way. Is it likely the transfer box is knackered or more likely in need of an oil change? I guess I’ll do the oil change anyway as it’s a simple cheap job.

It sure how to check alignment. I just remember someone had a transfer box prob (knocking on acceleration or deceleration) and found it was drive train out if alignment but can’t remember where

Deffo check/ change oil in first instance. They can get low due to seepage I think.
