What's this ticking noise???

hmmm, what's this ticking noise?

Starting up from cold this morning (7:30am chilly morning) I heard a tick tick tick tick tick from in front of me on the left side of the engine bay. It's not done it before and it ran with no warning lights all the way to the office and drove fine with no problems or weirdness on the way. I did hear some wooshing but that seemed to be coming from my right side and may have been the fan under my seat (I put the heated seats on as it was cold).

Any hints or tips? FFRR

Have a listen under the bonnet. It may be the auxiliary drive belt tensioner. They tend to be noisy when cold or damp.

Left side when sitting in the car? Sure it wasn't the FBH? 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Thanks guys, I would be more certain if I knew what an "FBH" was? Whistle FFRR

It should run when 6 degrees or below (IIRC). It makes a few ticking noises and then starts to more of a whine but you wouldn't normally hear the whine over the noise of the engine. You will also likely see some smoke if you look in the wheelarch on the LHS when it starts up. You can usually hear it winding down as well as it goes through a shutdown procedure when the engine is turned off. More info in the Wiki. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

If you've got the FBH, then you could try using the park heating to warm the car interior up prior to getting in when the temperature outside is below 16C.

Nice to do, especially if you have the remote to do it from the house, or can progamme the timing on the car. Nice too if you leave work and it's still chilly out. Razz

It should also tic tac for a lot longer than 5 times, so I don't think that's typical. Listen under the rear of the car before driving off, and it's also audible if you have the rear load space cover off/out of the car. As said, smoke coming from the under bonnet area can happen when the unit is running. Bet it scares the """" out of some. Cheers

I said 6 degrees above but I think I'm getting confused with my old D3. I was under the car today and the FBH was running and it was a lot warmer than 6! 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate
