L405 Roof bars recommendations with no rails

Hi everyone,

I do not have roof rails on my L405 and I feel like the roof rails plus roof bars will raise the basket I want to fit far to high and there will be a notable gap between the roof and the base of the expidition basket.

So I am on the hunt for roof bars that are slick enough to fit with no rails on the car, has anyone ever used any of the available universal ones that fit in the door shuts etc.?

Failing that i will have to make my own custom brackets and maybe take off the rail finishers and bolt directly to the roof

I have got a pair of Thule roof bars for my L322 that fit in the door openings and then pull down on suction feet.
I can’t really see why they wouldn’t fit equally well on a L405, but someone may know better ?

Thule don't list any.

Not sure if the L322 ones would work with anything significant on the roof.....

I queried with Thule why there were no roof bars for my vehicle. Their reply is below

"Good morning, thank you for taking the time to contact Thule with your enquiry.

Based on the vehicle details that you have kindly supplied I have checked our guides, however I have found the vehicle appears on our 'No Fit' list for roof mounted racks.

The Chief Test Engineer noted at the time of testing that this was due to the profile of your raised rails on the roof of the vehicle not allowing the solutions to attach safely and securely.

The only solution that Thule manufacture for your vehicle would be a tow bar solution.

Perhaps contacting Land Rover customer services to see if they have over come these difficulties."

This is the style I'm after.

On another topic perhaps, I am looking to go whole hog and have a winch and snorkle, but the issue is the SDV8 has 2 intake boxes and snorkles are available for the 3.0TDI but not the V8 I'm trying to best replicate the Silk trail 2013 L405, but so far no companies offer a step winch impact bar to sit behind the bumper etc. So I suspect most of it will be a bespoke build and i will have to get my welder out and make one from plate steel

I had this exact same problem with my 405. I spent a load of cash on the OEM roof rails to then fit cross bars.

I wouldn’t buy the rails again, they’re absolutely hopeless! Both a useless design and they appear to be made of cheese Evil or Very Mad They do look good if left untouched though Thumbs Up

Thanks that is very useful to know indeed!

Given that the bolt holes are present underneath the trim blanking strip I would imagine I would be able to design and build my own that bolts directly to the runners using the OEM fixing for the rails etc.

Seems reasonable that you could design & fabricate something to use the mountings for the rails.

The only concern would be insurance liability should anything go wrong - hopefully it wouldn't, but worth bearing in mind.

Also, if you're doing a full build, then be sure to post up a dedicated thread like the one Haylands did for his Thumbs Up

For my L322 I made up some roof bars out of galvanised unistrut on purpose made mounting blocks that screw into the roof fixings without having to break off the fixing cover flaps.
Could carry a tank on them Thumbs Up

Charles89 - I've got the factory roof rails and have successfully fitted Thule crossbars and a Rhino Rack platform/basket...overall, a very low profile setup.

I used the Thule 450R Rapid Crossroad mounts (that's the US model number...not sure if that's universal) and they fit the factory roof rails just fine. I think Thule does not officially list support for the L405 b/c it is a bit of a tight squeeze fitting the rubberized metal band under the rail. But it fits and works perfectly.

The only downside: the setup is actually so low profile, the panoramic sunroof can only open when the bars are in a few vary specific locations. I have mine placed so that I can use the sunroof fully (even with my bike trays mounted)...but not with the rhino rack.

Thank you for taking the time to share, that is much appreciated Thumbs Up

Do you think your set up would comfortably take 150kg? I'm not sure what the over all weight limit is for the L405 roof rails?

The official rating is usually limited by what you could happily do a slalom course with - and is governed by vehicle dynamics as much as anything else.

When parked up, I'd expect it to be able to take a roof tent with a couple of people......

What Alistair said. LR say the max load for the SWB roof rails is about 100kg, but that seems low to me. 2021 P525 | Eiger Gray

Wondering if anyone has considered the EZ-Awn Roof Rack Rail set. https://www.equipt1.com/collections/roof-r...-rack-rail

Seems like it "might" be an option over the OEM raised rails?
