Buying: 100k+ miles versus paying more for lower miles

I'm in the market for a 4.4 L322 Autobiography. As with all cars mileage affects asking price, so I've found myself in a dilemma. As an example:

Save £2,000 on a car with over 100k miles, put that money in the bank in case of issues. As the car has higher miles, future value will be less affected by additional miles being added on?

Spend that £2,000 on a 70k miles car that has less wear and tear

I'm expecting to do around 10,000 per year (maybe a little less)

This will be my first RR, with so many toys / things to go wrong I'm being a little more cautious than normal.

And on a side note, buy from a dealer (with warranty) or again, save some money buying private? Will these WarrantyWise warranties cover most aspects anyway? So better off buying on condition, history via a private sale and putting the £1-2k saving in the bank?

I'd say buy a RR on condition rather than mileage, more so than most other vehicle types.

Lots of thoughts on here about this, so I would say have a good read and then come back for any clarification.

As I see the thoughts, and this is only my interpretation, it's

Service history and recall/tech bulletin works, talk to the previous owner if possible and the servicing garage.
Condition in depth on a view which means known as above and faults that have been done. The known ones are well documented on here.
Does everthing on the car meet your needs such as standard or extras fitted.
Mileage, less important, could be high motorway miles, one on here bought an FF with about 300K and seems happy.

I would expect all the known problems on the FF have been covered on here so you can be well informed when looking at prosepctive purchases and if something turns up in future.
Warranties would be up to you, many seem happy with the right one and many just put aside the money for repairs or the next one. Your decision. I don't have one and have had an alternator failure in two years so far.

As I said, have a read, perhaps settle down for an evening or two with a glass of something enjoyable.

And don't forget, although as you're on here you probably already appreicate, you'll likely find more faults and resolutions on a forum of enthusiats. That said there's lot's of positively glowing happiness about Smile Cheers

Higher milers generally have had the issues that go at 70 to 80K sorted. For example, oil cooler in the V leaks. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

@OP

personally I would go for one off this forum. They are invariably well looked after as people on here care enough about their vehicles to want to know how they work and why they go wrong. You can also see their “problem” history on here! Shocked

Also, there have recently been some cracking cars on here at what I consider to be bargain basement prices. If you want lower mileage, my first stop would be Gary Elliott (sponsor on here) who makes sure all his stock is in tip top condition before letting them go.

Good luck with the search and don’t rush. The right one will come along in time. Thumbs Up

Beyond 50,000 ~60,000 miles it should all be about service history and condition as the suspension can already be at the point lots need replacing - which if you have to use dealers can be expensive.
It's therefore important for judging the selling price to know if parts may need checking / replacing soon or if they've already been done.
MOT history can also be important as cars with numerous fails in their history usually indicate cars that haven't been looked after and an owner that only repairs things when they break or he / she has to. Paul,

England 2005 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Zambezi Silver

I’m running a 2005 Td6 which has just ticked over the 100,000 mile mark. She doesn’t miss a beat and I put this down to a strict service regime using quality fluids and parts along with good preventive maintenance.

The other thing to bear in mind is that if you are going to start retuning and remapping your engine you will, in my opinion, put additional strain on the rest of the mechanical systems on the car.

Condition and service history over all else.

Also a bit of advice I'd give is - if you're SURE you'll be going for a FF, I'd buy a good diagnostic tool such as a GAP IID or similar, and use it to fault read when you go and look at some candidates. If you do look at some private sales, I've always asked politely on the phone when I'm organising if they'd mind, and never been knocked back, I'd suspect their reaction will tell you a lot about the car in any event.

It's something you'll 100% want to buy once you have the car anyway, it just moves a £400 spend forward a little and maybe takes it off the budget. There's a strong market for used IID tools on here, so worst case scenario is you don't buy one and lose about £70, but I'd say it's usefulness outweighs the risk.

Good luck with the search

IID Bluetooth advice is spot on. Get one. If you don’t eventually buy a Land Rover then sell it at minimal loss. They hold their value extremely well Thumbs Up 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I purchased at 50k and now have 97k on it.. I would say that over 80k was when the suspension started to need a refresh and pretty much now has had them all done now, so in reality something with 100k probably needs less spending than one with 70/80k over a few years period at lease suspension wise and assuming the owner looked after it.

If I purchased another L322 with 80k on I would refresh the lot on day 1 I think and be done with it for the foreseeable future. With 97k our suspension is probably the best it’s ever been from a feel and noise perspective.

Thanks all. I've got my eye on two cars:

This 2012 model with 111k miles on the clock on for £17k. Will come with a 6 month silver Warrantywise warranty.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ad...on=at_cars

This 2011 model with 70k miles on the clock for £19k. Will come with a 6 month Platinum Warrantywise warranty from a specialist Vogue dealer, who says he has never had a claim denied on that policy. (and I like that he will know these cars well)
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ad...on=at_cars

Aiming to see both at the weekend. Assuming both have good history, seem in good condition, drive ok etc, you will see the dilemma I would be in. Based on the above the 111k miler may be the better bet, then put that £2k in the bank as a contingency? Although the 70k miler would have better warranty cover and will be worth more when it comes to resale. I almost need one to be rubbish!!

And will keep an eye out on here for one, but my requirements are quite specific and I'm impatient!

And that tool? Any links to where I can buy one? Are they simple to use?

Agree with Stan, they are overpriced. That was the price at least couple of years ago dealers were hoping for. and not gertting.

As for warranty, I bet the dealers are saying, yup, the six month warrantywise is from the day you sign the deal to buy the car. Ah, what about the six month consumer protection you ask? Cue sheepish looks and shuffling feet with added B######t.

And perhaps you will have (lots of) work under warranty, oh my, sorry sir, missed that on our pre sale preparation, that the dealer can claim for under the warranty to save them the costs pre sale and so on and on.

Just saying Whistle Cheers

Got to be careful with the results from the tool, something as simple as a low battery can flag up a whole host of errors! I don’t think I have cleared ours so you can see all sorts going back years Rolling with laughter mostly to be expected from RR ownership! Make sure you interpret them, if there are loads with exactly the same mileage stamp then it could be as innocent as a flat battery.

I didn't think they were too bad on price. Sure I can find lower spec cars for under £15k, but a >2010 Autobiography seems a differnt story. (although I'm only looking at ones with light coloured interior, HD sound system, rear seat cooling, so the pickings are slimmer)

If anyone knows of another that fits those requirements for less please do post it up. I don't want to pay over the odds and suffer at resale!
