50 year anniversary Range Rover. And whoops it's mine!

50 years ago in January 1970 two very important things happened from my perspective. The first production Range Rover (YVB 153H) was registered. And, like a twin separated at birth, I was born, a rugged go-anywhere, slightly temperamental trend-setting parts-bin sort of a sibling that has put on plenty of weight over the last ~50 years.

Fast forwarding to today, and 6 weeks early (blame JLR efficiency. Who knew?), my half-centenary celebration FFRR arrived. And she drives like a baby-smooth peach, sounds like a 3Dgasm (hifi-wise), and smells like leather roses. The best thing is that on my drive home I only had 2 infuriating electrical glitches! Yes only two, calm down. That is: iPhone connectivity meltdown and climate control meltdown. Nothing like a 5 minute off/on to resolve such trivialities. Oh and "gearbox hot, switch to low range" warning message whilst I was parking on my steep hill. But rest assured, since then I've had 100% reliability! Rolling Eyes

Weirdly the Signature tunes were set to 2D by default and I was like, "this sounds good, loving it". And then I saw 3D in the settings upon which I was "er, wow!!". Trifleid 3D makes SO much difference, I've no idea why it's not switched on by default, but this Signature system is immersive, lots of punch but at the same time with plenty of control.

Hot stone massage? Well, combined with seat cooling, the hot stone massage is a ridiculous thing. Very therapeutic! I have fitted the headrest pillows to the front seats because I don't care how comfortable my rear seat passengers are. There're a tight fit, a bit of swearing, but they are on and they are super-comfy, of course.

I am thrilled so far, it's exceeding my expectations and I'm only 20 miles in. What a privilege to pilot this thing. Years of saving and so worth it. Thumbs Up

A shout out to Beadles North West London.. the largest dealership in Europe. Jeremy Jackson is the sales manager there, previously of Lookers Park Royal (previous site sponsors, of RRS site at least). They've looked after me extremely well, including ensuring I got that factory visit, so if you are South East call them. My sales guy was Ketan Patel and was VERY willing to do a deal, which is what stopped me going via Autoebid to an anonymous dealer in the-middle-of-nowhere. Call him and demand the best price, he'll find a way. Bow down

These are the pillows not fitted. This weekend I'll send a photo of them actually fitted to the front seats and you'll see how they affect the look, but from a feel perspective they're very decent. Thing is, the standard AB headrests are fine, but the pillows are... more pillowy. Actually more like the 2017 winged headrest. I think they downgraded in 2018.

And you cannot order pillows on their own... you have to have Comfort or Comfort Plus rear exec seating. I personally think they should sell the pillows as an accessory. Looking a them, JLR could price them at £100 or £200 each, but I bet they won't. They are basically a semi-semi-analine leather structure, with a nice foam insert. Probably about £25 each to make.

I got the plate via a DVLA auction, online bidding. It doesn't mean anything, but I like the relative symmetry of it. If you wait to the end of a DVLA auction, the prices are definitely keener. I am so glad I stumped up for this because the default plate they were going to put on was quite ugly (and I would have complained, actually).

For anyone thinking of Espresso/Almond, I totally recommend! I never saw it in a L405 before, certainly not with the satin wood. So it was a gamble, and it paid off. Obviously black is purposeful and safe, but this combo is very mellow and feels more luxurious simply because it's warmer and, well, more different. Ivory is very special, but you have to mull over how well you can keep it looking perfect if its a long term car. The ivory in my old XJR never looked new new, whereas the Arabica in my prior RRS looked new at 9 years old. Regardless, this gets Gtechniq interior protection next week (along with the fully monty externally).

I was wishing I could afford a chauffeur (and I'd ask my wife, but she's a bit too intimidated about the size for me to completely relax in the back!). But then it's not too shabby at the business end up front.
