Low Battery - Start Engine

The 'Low Battery - Start Engine' warning appeared yesterday.

The upper tailgate unlocked but didn't open when the automatic button was pressed yesterday. Took the car for a motorway run and all seemed back to normal.

This Afternoon, 'Low Battery - Start Engine' warning on again, although boot auto buttons were working okay.

Bought CTEK CT5 start stop battery charger today and have just left the charger clips (for overnight) on the red and negative terminals in the engine bay (left hand side of bay at rear as you look at it from front end of car):

Car hasn't been on many decent runs for a couple of weeks and the temperature has obviously been dropping which might account for the apparent battery drain?

Can't quite work out the instructions for the CTEK. Is this the right way to leave the battery on charge overnight or is the battery supposed to be taken out of the boot under the spare wheel please?

Thanks.

Thumbs Up

Mine has started doing this very regularly , I just connect to the posts under the bonnet. Think a new battery is needed soon..

Yeah low battery warnings aren't remedied by just charging the battery unless the car is sitting weeks at a time. You either have a drain, a tired battery or a problem at the alternator.

I had the same problems on my 2018 car and the dealer took it in and tested it. They replaced the battery under warranty Thumbs Up All LR cars from 1984

It's the right place to charge - I connected up the permanent cable that came with my CTEK to those terminals

Definitely a drain on the battery or one that needs replacing.

Do you have a dashcam that stays on after the ignition is switched off? I had one with a ‘magic’ controller that cut it off after a set time/battery voltage and this still drained my battery.

I connect my Ctek directly to the battery in the boot and have a permanent cable attached. Works well and allows me to attach a solar charger when I leave it at the airport for a month in the summer. MY23 D350 HSE

Yes, I have a Blackvue 750-2CH dashcam that stays on after ignition off,but that definitely should not drain the battery if you get the settings right on the Power magic unit under the lower glove box,

My wife has a new Golf with exactly the same Dashcams and she has had no battery warnings.

The dealer should replace the battery. All LR cars from 1984

That's exactly the same Dashcam I had problems with.

I suggest you check the magic box. You can change both the time to switch off and the battery voltage to switch off (12v or 12.5v). I tried reducing all the values but in the end switched in to turn off when the ignition does.

That was last winter when I was charging the main battery almost daily to avoid the low battery notification. Since then the battery has been fine so long as the RR hasn't just been used for short journeys with all the heaters/lights etc. on. The FBH has also worked fine. Meaning the issue was definitely the Dashcam and not the battery.

If you look at the spec of the Dashcam I recall it draws around 300mA when in standby and more when operating. That's quite a lot. Below from the manual:

Avg. 350 mA (4.2 W at 12 V, when GPS and Wi-Fi is On)
Avg. 300 mA (3.6 W at 12 V, when GPS and Wi-Fi is Off) MY23 D350 HSE

But if you switch off with the ignition, you get no parking recordings which is when most bumps to you car occur IMHO. All LR cars from 1984

Agreed, it’s a flaw in their design. Do a search and it’s a common problem with BlackVue Dashcams drawing too much current. They also offer an additional mini battery solution but that provides only a limited operating time after the ignition is switched off. I didn’t think the price was worth it.

A new battery might cure the problem for a while but before doing that I measure how long the Dashcam stays on when the battery is fully charged as it may be less than you think.

As one of the top providers of Dashcams BlackVue need to come up with a viable solution to this problem. MY23 D350 HSE

No, I adjusted the switches on the magic box to the maximum voltage (12.5V) and minimum time (12hr) which resulted in it always switching off with the ignition. See below.

After the new battery does your Dashcam continue to operate and if so for how long? MY23 D350 HSE
