Tailgate Stay - Caught it early

I noticed some surface rust on my tailgate stay, so rubbed it off and treated it with some Kurust.

I'll paint it once that's dried.

May be worth lifting the carpet flap and checking yours.

Very good advice.

But also to check and grease the ball and socket which do wear out and pop off, (and this on my 2019 AB model) That’s how I found out when the tailgate wouldn’t shut. New actuator and hinge to solve the problem. Beware all!

Is it possible to separate the ball and socket in situ..?

Well mine had disintegrated - including the spring steel retainer that is attached to the end of the actuator which you can see if you zoom into the picture of the new one below. When I fitted the new one it was a case of grease then press the socket onto the ball (hinge).

I guess it should spring back off if you prise it but if it is corroded then probably disaster!

I think I have seen replacement spring steel retainers shown on here by a member who found some on flea bay. Maybe someone will shout up.

Get it wd40 , clean and greased first then it has a chance to come apart easier.

Yes, this is a very common thing to corrode on the L405, there is also down to the left, at least on my MY2017, a completely unpainted bolt which gets very rusty. I replaced with a new one wich I painted before replacement. I recommend checking a couple of times a year and applying ACF-50 or Lanoguard grease or similar. V6 Vogue - “Less is More” - less to go wrong!

If it’s M8x30, then LR037087, plus a can of touch-up. V6 Vogue - “Less is More” - less to go wrong!
