You can rule out dodgy oil then, assuming the level is ok.

our used to make a similar noise when cold or ticking over.

90% sure its an idler but seeing how its been off road for almost 10 months i can be sure if my memory is correct now.

but it would make sense alot of bearings will stop making noise when warm due to expansion

Got the car back from Mechanic and he couldn't find the issue. I dont know what to try next. Maybe I should buy the idler(s) for supercharger as drive belt changed and all Tensioners/Idlers attached were checked without issue.
But the Supercharger belt hasn't been changed so mechanic suggested changing belt and idlers and see it the eliminates issue.

Supercharger was checked for movement all seemed sturdy and in place.

Easy to test, take the belt off and start the engine. If noise has gone the problem is related to the 'charger, belt or idlers. If the noise is still there you are wasting money on those parts.

Ok all bit of an update.

L322 4.2 Supercharged recap...

1. Noise upon startup


2. Example of what mechanic was feeling through snout of supercharger was a little amount of play. When turning one way or other he said it didn't feel smooth and when you move the snout left to right within a couple of mm if seemed to clonk a little but that could be to do with something being spring loaded.


3. Belts off and startup to replicate sound was unsuccessful no noise was heard.


4. We are changing belt and part attached to this message
9Whatever that is as apparently its not very smooth when spinning) and tensioner for Supercharger tomorrow.

5.Checked other pulleys and Tensioners and changed other drive belt already last week.

Scared now it is the Supercharger which I spent best part of £700 getting rebuilt 6 months ago. I am praying it isnt and that its something more trivial. Fingers and toes are well and truly crossed. Range Rover Vogue SE 2007 L322 4.2 Supercharged 121k. Engine rebuilt @ 120666 Miles

Surely this is good news, you have isolated the sound to something linked with the supercharger and not the internals of the engine. Spinning the supercharger did not sound great, kindof gravelly. When you had it rebuilt was it the whole charger or just the snout and bearings in that? Was oil put back in the snout when reassembled? Do you have a guarantee on the rebuild?

So indeed confirmation of where the problem lies is a step forward. I am sending the supercharger for a check over with the company that rebuilt last year in the hope it's something repairable.

There is nothing spring loaded in that blower. Based on the vids my guess is they may have reused the superchargers snout coupler. It is a plastic disk with 6 holes. The shaft from the snout side of the blower has 3 prongs that slide into it, the gear/rotor 1/2 of the blower has another 3 pins which slide into the other 3 holes. The coupler joins the rotating halves of the blower once assembled. The vid showing the play points to this as the root cause. If it is worn you'll have play in the snout pulley before the gears actually grab.


when they're worn (especially at idle) you'll get that metal on plastic knocking noise or commonly referred to as marbles in the blower. If it's only worn slightly, the thermal expansion of the prongs inside the blower when running will take up the slack in the disk and the noise will stop. It'll also stop under load. The remedy is to remove and split the snout off the blower and replace the coupler, it is a $12 part.

If you're removing the blower I wouldn't send it back to them for repair.. Order the part online for an m112 eaton blower, buy GM blower oil or a synthetic 5w-30. Remove the bolts from the snout of the blower... pull it off... oil will drain. Clean the mating surfaces, RTV a new gasket, replace coupler, put it all back together. Hand tight the bolts in a cross patter then torque in a cross pattern to 23ftlbs. Sit the blower lvl and fill with oil until it pours from the fill, then cap.

also just in-case you do replace this part yourself... note the blower is actually 3 sections... the snout, the body housing the rotors and rear needle bearings and a gear housing sandwiched between the two. If you remove the snout it has ledges on it to pry it away from the center section. It is important you do not remove the center section from the rear, otherwise you'll have to completely separate all 3 parts, clean surfaces and then make a new gasket seal in two places instead of just one (the snout). It's also possible it you remove the rotors, the rear needle bearings will lose their seating and or grease. The rotors are pressed up in the middle section and ride on a couple of bearings, best not to remove the middle unless you're doing a full rebuild. Once the middle comes out, it sort of makes sense to replace all the bearings etc as things can lose their alignment/lubrication

The original coupler in these is spring loaded - plastic shell with metal spring loaded tabs. I would be really surprised if powerhouse didn't insert a solid plastic coupler when rebuilding it, but you never know!

Of interest, I changed the coupler to a solid one and the snout bearings last summer but the engine or blower is making a similar noise to those in the video clips. I wonder if there is an issue with the solid coupler or bearings being sold.
