TDV8 turbo noise

Just got a 2008/58 TDV8 3.6 and am a little concerned about some noise when accelerating hard. Firstly, a few remarks.

Full service history, no smoke from exhausts, no loss of power that I can tell, intercooler hoses don't appear to be split but I will put new ones on anyway... There were small traces of oil in the pipes but not excessive.

The noise sounds like a loud whistle/howl and may be coming from the nearside but hard to tell, and it only seems to happen when booting it, not noticeable when driving normally.

Is it likely to be anything other than a knackered turbo? I haven't received the new pipes yet but I don't expect them to make a difference as the ones I have just removed seem to be in tact, albeit they seem to be different - one has Land Rover marks and is soft, the other is plain and has no logo and seems a lot more rigid.

Any help would be appreciated.

Presume no error messages or limp mode?

Exhaust manifold stud is known to shear on the near side. Causes a gasket leak. I have a whistle as you describe under full throttle/ boost which I suspect is from there. Big job to fix so I've learned to live with it.

Any bigger boost leak would most likely give an error message.

Don't think failing turbos give much indication they're going. They just go!

No, nothing at all. Will see what happens when I fit the hoses, and will check for other possible leaks.

New upper intercooler pipes fitted but no change. Will check exhaust manifold.

Not easy to even see the exhaust manifold. Check for missing studs/ nuts.

Mine makes a noise (when warm) best described as the VW air cooled engine. I suspect it’s a blowing exhaust but I’m told that the studs are intact. The ones we can see anyway.
Imagine holding a sheet of paper in front of an electric fan and that gives an idea of the sound. It’s fine when cold- proper v8 noise. It’s just annoying when hot especially combined with the diesel rattle! 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Just ordered one of these. Hopefully it'll allow me to inspect all the studs. It's only cheap so worth a shot. Probably a handy thing to have anyway.

I'll let you know how it works when I get it. Probably take ages to arrive from China anyway.

Still making the noise but no codes or smoke. Cannot see any cracks. Will have to check studs.

Well, I give up. It is booked into a local garage next week for them to have a look.

Garage 1 reckons it could be the nearside turbo but won't do the job.

Garage 2 have had it two days... Sounds like they haven't found the fault.

That’s not ideal then. At least if you have a proper diagnosis, you can decide if you need to worry about it or not.... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Second garage said they don't know what it is and didn't seem to want to help.

Tonight I pressurised the small hose coming off the air box and it sounded as though there is a hissing sound from somewhere in the vicinity of the oil filter, around the centre of the top of the engine. Not sure if that is just air movement or a leak. The plastic manifold doesn't seem to have any cracks. Are there any hoses that tend to leak in that area, as it is hard to see and difficult to pinpoint the sound?

Think so. Just need to find a garage with the kit.

Not managed to get a smoke test yet. Just wondered if anyone had any other ideas as to what it might be? Hard to get it to a garage with current restrictions.
