Hi, I may be ready for new tires on 2017 L405 soon. 275/40/22 Continentals are on there from the factory. I am thinking of switching to 285/40 for for a few extra mm of sidewall.

Seems most on here like the Conti or Pirellis which I am also considering. Have not seen anyone running Michelin Pilots, but they look interesting except for they are not available in 285/40 size. Only in 275/40.

Has anyone had experience with Michelin Pilots?

I have just fitted 275/40/23 Pirelli Zero's on mine with the foam "silent" insert and they are amazingly quiet! Have dome zero miles on them to test anything else due to the lockdown but the few miles home made a massive difference in road noise

Ok, thanks. So the pirellis are quieter and they come in 285/40 size as well... I haven’t noticed much road noise from the continentals really but they have worn pretty fast. 19k miles and the tires look worn already.

I found the Pirellis Verdre PNCS ( foam) quieter than than the standard contis.  2015 4.4 AB

The profile (i.e. Sidewall nominal height) is a % of the width, so in a 40 profile a 285 has a sidewall of 114mm and a 275 would be 110mm

4 mm is nearly half a centimetre so not to be sniffed at although I wonder how much difference it makes in the real world.

I had Conti's on my RRS and the grip was great but the wear was terrible. I switched to Pirellis and was very happy indeed. I have Pirellis on my new fatty and they are just fine in all regards, although tyre noise is present, but I have nothing to compare them to in this model. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... In the Uk you can normally tell the Insurrance company of a modification like wheels or tyre size changes and they may either refuse to insure or add a premium and add a note on your policy of the modification.

Here in Spain you cannot change your wheel size or tyre size from the sizes specified on your ‘ oem specifications log book’ which is used for the MOT (ITV here), they check the tyres fitted every time and will fail the car until it’s corrected... it’s a pain as I want to run later ff wheels and tyres but cannot.

So the US insurance companies don’t ask about being informed of any modifications?

I've never had an insurance company ask about modifications other than how it relates to the value of the car. So if you want your $10K wheels covered under your policy, you'd have to tell them so they can adjust your premium. In the US, vehicle registrations are handled at the state level, not the federal level, so every state has different rules, different requirements, and very different costs. When I lived in New Jersey new cars came with a 3 year inspection sticker, but after that you had to have it inspected every year. The inspection basically consisted of checking that the lights worked, checking the brakes (on a roller), tires for wear, and looking for OBDII codes related to emissions. A check engine light was an automatic fail. Registration was a flat fee of about $70 per year. Some states also measure actual emmissions from the exaust.

Where I live now in Iowa, there is no vehicle inspection requirement at all for any age vehicle. You could be stopped and fined for operating an unsafe vehicle, but it would have to be wildly and obviously unsafe or the cause of an accident. Registration fees are expensive, but I don't think the fees have anything to do with the lack of inspection. You pay a percentage of the MSRP of the vehicle every year for 12 years as part of your annual registration fees. The fee steps down from 1% to 0.5% over that 12 year period. One reason I've got an 11 year old RR and not a 9 year old RR, but I'll still pay $400 or so to register this year. After that it should only be a $51 annual fee.

Just checked the sidewall height and it’s 10mm smaller on the 285,s ?
