no gas in aircon

i have no gas in my aircon , so does that mean there's a leak or could it be that it hasn't been topped up for a while?... ... - .- -.

Just had the BMW M3 re-gassed in the Midlands after the nice man nitrogen pressure tested it at 100psi with no leaks found (after 30 minutes). The re-gas included a lubricant additive to 're-awaken' the seals after the old girl has been unused for quite some time.

During long periods of non use the seals effectively shrink and the gas leaks away. You may well have a leak of course but it cost me just £65 to get the old girl fired up again.

And a real nice guy to talk to at that. Thumbs Up Currently running FFRR MY10 TDV8 3.6L and a Disco 3 XS Commercial (tank like but very effective as a Company van). Plus one mint condition Track Day Car in the form of an E36 M3 3.2L Evolution circa June 1996 with lots of go faster bits and only 52k miles on the clock! Oh, plus a few bits to make it slow down really quickly as well! Luvverly.

when the gas gets low for one reason or an other your air con will not run, this is so you dont screew the compressor, so is your system low or empty, V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

kwik fit were doing a deal, if they could not improve it by 10% they would not charge you, whip it in there and they will test the system, it must have a leak or some thing was removed and never recharged. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

i would go with kwikfit they said if the cant make it cooler by 10% doesn't cost a thing. Saying that cant be to hard if kwik fit are doing it.

I wouldn't bother stan. They sell it halfords for about £40 a tin. It will only put more gas in and what you really need is the old gas taking out and new putting in.

If you shop round, you can get it done at garage for £50 and they will pressure test it for leaks. Thumbs Up My Previous RR's!

i've had a read on the interweb and i agree going to a garage seems the best as they also [like you say Thumbs Up ] test, lubricate and fill for a reasonable amount...my boy starts his new job soon so i'll wait until he's got his 'feet under the table' and let him do it... ... - .- -.

Are you talking about using the "top up kit"? Even the largest halfords do will only fill the system half full. It also won't evacuate the system thoroughly, lubricate the compressor or remove any contaminents.

Then after spending nearly £100 on a couple of the kits from halfords it could all leak out again in a weeks time because you didnt spot a split O-ring.

I've never had much success with KwikFit and their re-gas service. Last time I took the P38 there they sucked all the gas out and never put any back in. I pointed this out on the printout they gave me and then actually put some in.

There is a guy down here (Melksham) if you fancy a road trip, I've used him on 2 P38s and two freelanders. From re-gassing to replacing whole pipe units. If you suspect a leak he will fill with UV die and go over the car with a UV lamp to pinpoint the leak.

I know most folks don't like to go over a dealer's service reception threshold but the 3 service receptions that I have visited in the last fortnight have been offering a full aircon service for £55. Stan, your post inspired and reminded me that mine was also empty. I took it in this morning to a body shop on stake hill in Middleton (been there before).

He did it straight away:

Checked the current pressure which confirmed it was empty. Slight worry as I assumed there would be a leak

Then he injected a die into the system and checked it with a uv lamp. No obvious leaks.

Then sucked everything out and left it on vacuum for 5 minutes. This confirmed, no pressure loss so definitely no leaks.

Refill to the correct amount (took about 10 seconds!).

Test and all ok. Running at 4 degrees, which would keep a polar bear comfy Thumbs Up

£40 all in Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

He'd ran out of ac bombs so I bought one from halfords on the way home. Now smells less like a pond Embarassed

Couldn't fault it for the price. I noticed the halfords tins were £45 Shocked My Previous RR's!
