Thinking of Converting 4.4LV8 (M62) to 3.0L TD6 (M57D30) -

Hello,

I understand it sounds strange but my L322 4.4L V8 (M62) is sitting in the garage with a hollow engine bay & the garage space is occupied with 2 blown engines (on both engines the block is cracked). Did some home work on M62 and found out that it is a troublesome motor and very prone to breaking down compared to the M57 TD6 D30.
What do you guys think about the idea?
Any LR specialist around to help me pull this through?

Different Motor - Ofcourse
Different Gearbox - Nope - They all used the same Zf 5 Speed gearbox between 2002-2005.
Different Electronics - Only ECU & Wiring harness. Rest all I understand is the same.
Lastly, sell mine and buy a diesel - Would have already done that. But this one is my first and has been special so would like to do all it takes to bring her back to life Smile

I thought the td6 had a gm box, which was at best made of cheese and was not long term durable?

It’s absolutely not the same gearbox, the TD6 uses a GM gearbox and it’s very much a weak point as the valve body is made from softer aluminium.

The TD6 also has the fuel burning heater fitted as standard to help the engine warm up. Hardly any V8 petrols had that.

I’d be tempted to put another V8 back in, or if you really fancy a project, one from an E39 BMW M5. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

You got me excited on your project idea of of plonking a motor from E39 M5. Please tell me more about it. No harm in exploring the option. However, wouldn’t want to lose out on the functionality of the 4X4 & Air suspension system.

I don’t have any info, just that I know it was derived from the 4.4 V8...... would probably be a pain to do.

If you wanted to go the diesel route, it might be easier to buy a cheap TD6 and just start moving things across.

I know the 4.4 Petrol suffers with oil leaks due to gaskets and perished PCV hoses.... and a few on here have ended up doing timing chains and guides, but I’ve not seen loads with cracked blocks.... maybe a few. Is there any way you can test another engine before you fit it? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Covering petrol to diesel would be a mission. S62 from an m5 would be better or a 4.6 from an X5? Similar engine and the 4.6 has had alpina fettling.

I have a 4.8iS X5 which I plan to convert to rwd manual and just researching that is enough of a mission 1995 4.6 v8, green/tan (long gone)
2005 4.8iS X5, blue/black
2011 4.4 tdv8, black/black (gone)
2003 3.0d X5, Oxford green/black/manual
2021 p575 SVR, BR green/vintage tan

Thank you all for Very tempting suggestions. I definitely lost direction for sometime. However, I will stick to TD6 conversion for sanity sake. Need the conversion to be cost effective.

Excuse my reservations about this, but if you are going to do this engine swap for 'cost effective' reasons, wouldnt you be better trying to get hold of another petrol V8? Surely its going to be cheaper overall than trying to put in a Diesel and all the different ancilliaries?

And why do you need Chassis/VIN numbers from other people?
