Range Rover 4.4 TDV8 crank sensor change

Range rover has been cutting out intermittently 4 times now in the last month .
the last 2 instances were 9 hrs driving between each other .
ordered the crank sensor and put a couple of hrs aside to change ,,,, lol how deluded was i to think this would be an easy job.

thank got i asked Land rover where it was as i wouldnt have seen it from underneath .

other cars have been in the bell housing . or the front of the crank with a trigger wheel .
(oh no landrover do things slightly different )
Drivers front wheel up in the air .
Remove the front wheel .
disconnect the battery
Remove the heat shields over the starter 10mm and 8mm .
remove the rubber pipes from the starter
remove the small wire 8mm from the starter is my memory is correct 8mm.
Then remove the main battery feed on the 15 or 17mm if my memory is correct .
13mm for the Starter bolts through the bell housing
unless you drop the exhaust out the way you will have to leave the starter in your way .
at this point you still cant see the crank sensor but you can see the wire with the heat shield wraped round it .
follow that from the Plug and follow it to the Block where the gromet is sealing up the access hole to the block and covering the view to the sensor .

remove the Gromet and its just inside the casing but you still cant see it and after removig the torqx screw size TBC.
its quite difficult to say the least to remove and aided with the small mirror.
re fitting is just as bad as many crank sensors ive fitted in the past have had a perfect hole to sit in .
this has a ledge to sit in and a hole to screw into as long as you align it correctly . see pic

Two questions please....
1) What lead you to suspect fault was sensor .?.. did it give any fault codes etc . on an iid or similar.

2) Did replacing it solve your problem.

...and worth considering changing the starter which tend to go around 70-80k miles if you're doing this

. Cheers, Greg

No 4 is the actuator motor.
No 5 the actuator.

Can the actuator motor be put through its motions without actually driving . It would it be a disconnect and move manually. I've driven today to work and back and not a bean of trouble . I will try again tomorrow.
Many many thanks for the diagram
Andy

Hi
Just an update since the crank sensor swap out .

drove now for an estimated 3-4 months and no cutting out so the swap of the sensor has done the job .

Previously cutting out every week
Thumbs Up

cheers

Andy
