Dry noise noise under acceleration - Diff problem?

Our 3.0 TDv6 hasn't been used much this year and has spent most of the time tucked away in our garage, save for being cleaned, the odd local run and a few 30/ 40 minute motorway drives more recently.

The Style 5004 22" alloys were changed for 22" turbine alloys in March.

Recently, I've noticed what could be described as a light metal on metal noise when the car is being driven (you could also describe it as a grinding noise but perhaps light metal on metal paints a better picture because it's a subtly quiet noise, yet still noteworthy).

Initially, I though it might be the new alloys rubbing on something. Then I thought it might be surface corrosion on the brake discs due to a lack of use. However, having tried to pinpoint the noise, I've found that when the car is under light acceleration, the light metal on metal noise remains constant; then when the foot is lifted off the accelerator (and the car is no longer under acceleration but still in drive/ dare I use the term "freewheeling"), the noise goes.

The car is under warranty although I always prefer to be in a position to suggest to the main dealer what I reasonably think the issue might be so as to avoid wasted time due to the oft used response, "Yes, they all do that sir."

Any ideas as to what it might be, would be appreciated (drive shaft related)?

Thanks.

Not sure if it’s a wheel weight or brake shield rubbing so haven’t yet jacked car up and rotated the wheels as yet, because:
Metal on metal might sound might be the wrong description. Had someone sit in the car with me and we both agreed we could hear the noise. Maybe more like a low droning/ rubbing sound. But not when the car freewheels. Only when the car is under acceleration but only above a certain speed which is jogging pace and above. Said passenger then got out and jogged alongside both sides of the outside of car and said from outside the car they could hear no noise at all. They got back in and said they could hear the noise again. They know nothing about cars and asked “Is it the axle, sounds maybe like it’s coming from underneath the car in the middle towards the front?”

As it’s been sat, I would give it a few miles before throwing the panic switch Ryan.🤔

May be nothing just needs a few miles under its belt to ease everything off again, if it persists then get the dealer to investigate! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

220 miles in so far and the noise isn’t for shifting. It has now been described as like a brushing sound. It stops at about 75mph. Then at 75 mph the grinding/ brushing sound is replaced by a sort whirring/ low level whistling wind noise that sounds like its coming from underneath the car/drivetrain. The when slowing down to roundabouts and turning corners etc at about 10 to 20 mph it sounds (whilst under acceleration) like that grinding break disc noise. Annoying.

still think you should take each wheel off and inspect.....i recall back in my days as a tyre centre manager a similar problem and it turned out to be part of a 'stick on' weight flapping about and hitting the disc shield.. ... - .- -.

Would have thought the weight would have come off by now if it was that.... might be wrong.....

Short of doing as Stan suggests, the changing all fluids etc.... not sure.... get it on a ramp for a good look see.

Not trying to be a scare monger BUT does the noise sound like its coming from towards the back and middle of RR ? Mine made a similar noise when diff seal was replaced incorrectly leading to failed rear diff, hopefully not your issue Thumbs Up 2015 4.4 AB

Thanks very much Dolph 👍🏻

You racked my brain. Checked my posts (quite the reference library this forum).

25 February 2020:
“...It was in at MD for "interim service" today... and during the health check they reported a leak from the pinion seal on the rear diff. They said it takes several hours to replace (think the advisor might have said 6 hours, although no idea if that's accurate). It's covered under the LR Extended Warranty. ... “

I’ll give them a ring. Only issue is (if it is that) we’re a few hundred miles away with a few hundred to do and a week or so before they will be able to look at it again.

Hopefully its not that , mine started to make the noise after approximately 2 - 3000 miles after the seal change. It got progressively louder after that. If nothing else its worth ruling it out Thumbs Up 2015 4.4 AB

Ours hasn’t even done 2k miles since the seal got change in February. I’ve booked it with the main dealer that did the work but it’ll be next week Rolling Eyes
