You do indeed have to self declare at 70 and every 3 years after that but as long as you had category B+E prior to 70 it will continue on your new licence after 70. Some of the categories will disappear at 70 unless you take a medical but they really only relate to larger, heavier vehicles.

I think you are right Alistair.,

Mine all now expire on the eve of my 73rd birthday
I have got in section 9... AM/A/B1/B/BE/f/h/k/l/n/p/q

Had to put the light on to read it though Rolling with laughter

All the best threads head off topic Laughing

So it looks like you do lose the heavier ratings @ 70

BE looks like you're covered - depending on what they put as the start date -

Category BE
You can drive a vehicle with a MAM of 3,500kg with a trailer.

The size of the trailer depends on the BE ‘valid from’ date shown on your licence. If the date is:

before 19 January 2013, you can tow any size trailer
on or after 19 January 2013, you can tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg

No need to apologise Mike it was interesting and my checking and your comments were reassuring that its not going to be a licence issue that holds me back.

In fact I don't even know how much caravans weigh. Geoff

Don't forget to factor in:
Caravan insurance......circa £400
Caravan service annual.... circa £270
Caravan storage?.........circa £300

It all adds up trust me.
All being well, I believe there should be a Caravan Show at the NEC this February which is always a hoot to go to.
Just shoot those questions you have out there, there's enough of us here to give you several informative answers. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Thanks 889,

I hadn't thought of those costs, I only camp about 3 times a year for long weekends so a hotel or B&B would be cheaper if I want a change from the tent. Although I do enjoy the camaraderie of a site, it's the only time I cook and eat Bacon and Eggs out doors as well as saying "Good Morning Campers" (to myself I realise some take everything seriously and may not see the funny side), as I make my way to the communal facilities smiling and whistling to perform the three S's.

It's worth mentioning that I spent most of my working life in hotels, they can be sad places.

Whatever happens I'll still do the course though as it sounds fun and really with my car I shouldn't be anxious about towing.

Thanks
Geoff Geoff

Plus replacing tyres before they are actually worn out (age related).
& the possibility of requiring braked trailers to be subject to a form of MOT & registration in the future.

Not really that relevant 5tan - if you aim to cruise at 60 you will attain that average easier than trying to maintain 70.
Even if aiming to drive for an eight hours in a day there will be very little difference in the miles covered. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

it is relevant Brian as most yorkie drivers stay at 60mph so without towing a white box they are easy to pass, with white box its more of a problem.. ... - .- -.

Be aware caravanning can become addictive, we started over 44years ago and have now done over 125,000 miles towing caravans.

The last couple of years worked out at 260 nights away each year but this year only 70 due to lock down.

The RR is a superb tow car and easy to tow with.

I know a lot of people who did the Caravan Club, now Caravan and motorhome club, towing course and said they learnt a lot and it gave them more confidence.

Caravan Finder is a good source of vans and layouts and also gives info on size and weight, my van weighs 2,000kg and is near the top of UK vans range.

Ian
