United States 2016 Range Rover 5.0 SC V8 Corris Grey
Front end clunk I’m lost

Have a 2016 L405 that I have replaced all 4 lower control arms, sway bar bushings and sway bar links to battle front end clunking. Well it’s definitely a lot tighter up front and smoother ride but some smaller bumps where the suspension side to side I’m still getting a clunk. It’s more of like a metal on metal rattle but when I check underneath the rover with a dead blow against all parts I get nothing. I’m stumped. I’d really hate to replace both front air shocks for nothing as they are pricey. Has anybody else found any issues other than the usual parts that I’ve already changed? Thanks in advance.

None of those symptoms and I had a buddy move the wheel left to right and I watched movement of tie rod ends.

Hi,

If it's only related to one sided bumps, i.e. if both wheels on the same axle traversing the same bump together it doesn't happen then you're most likely to have issues with the ARB.

Either the bushes themselves, the mountings or more likely the drop links.

I'd run round all the mounting points making sure they're torqued up correctly.

If you're getting a shimmy when you're going over bumps then I'd say you have a dodgy shock.

New nuts with the new drop links, all chassis bolts were torqued down while on the ground and the strut wishbone as well. Sway bar was clean and smooth before putting in new bushings with opening facing rear of vehicle then clamshell torqued to sway bar brackets then sway bar brackets torqued to chassis. Didn’t see any leaks from the hoses or motor on sway bar.inner tie rods and outer tie rods feel good and I checked everything possible with a dead blow for noise and got nothing. The noise is definitely up front on both sides. Hit a bump in the road with both wheels at same time no noise, one side or the other and it’s like a clunk/rattle. Anytime after be side or the other is off level with the other side I get the clunk. You don’t feel the clunk in the steering wheel or in the floorboards/seat. Had a buddy ride with me and we both work on cars for hobby and just scratching our heads. Reading online I see issues with the sway bar design. I’m almost contemplating changing air struts as they have 82K on them and the vehicle is a tank. I’m still learning everything about this thing so not sure if I have active or passive arb but it has hydraulic hoses going to the pump/motor on the sway bar

Definitely one side or the other up front, hit the bump with both front wheels it’s good. New bushings and sway bar links installed when I did all 4 lower control arms.

I have not tried bleeding the system yet but I will check out the manual and see if I can get it done. I’ve already got one car in the shop under warranty I don’t wanna have 2 but if it comes down to it I’ll let the dealership figure it out after that.

Unfortunately I don’t have a way to pressurize the reservoir so I can bleed both sides like manual says
