Find the description of my L322 G4 Challenge Range Rover I am parting with.
Fun fact: It was recently selected by Top Gear as one of the 10 most interesting Range Rovers ever built.

The Vehicle
In the vendor’s hands for the past eight years, this is one of only 30 G4 Range Rover L322s built for the 2003 event. Fully restored and freshly serviced, the vendor tells us that it is “arguably the best 2003 ex-G4 L322 known to the G4 Challenge Club”.
A 2002 model, it was built to take part in the Australian sections and became the most photographed Range Rover of the entire G4 event, eventually finding itself featured on Land Rover's promotional material including adverts, posters, vinyl banners, and catalogues, all of which are available and come with the vehicle.
Restored and meticulously maintained by the vendor since 2013, no expense has been spared with everything that is either age-expired or is considered to be a serviceable item having been replaced – and that no-expense-spared approach includes replacing most of the interior trim.
Said to “drive superbly” it also comes with two large boxes of G4 challenge documents and miscellaneous clothing plus plenty of new/old stock parts, a winching kit including a brand-new winch cable, and a photo library of hundreds of images in the original G4 competition and subsequent international events and publication extracts.
It also took part in the 2018 Land Rover 70th-anniversary convoy driving up the Hillclimb at Goodwood, is featured in Land Rover's Top Trumps' playing cards and App, and was at the Goodwood Speedweek's Range Rover 50th anniversary recently.
Recently brought back to the UK from France, its owner is Land Rover Owner magazine’s international editor, which means he knows his stuff and has poured decades of Land Rover enthusiasm to bring it to the condition you see today.
On the Outside
The Tangiers Orange paintwork looks sensational, something that is partly a result of the vehicle’s ongoing cossetting, partly a result of a recent valet and Gtechniq ceramic coating - but largely due to a recent refresh of the vehicle’s bodywork and paint.
This refresh included having the sills, rear door shuts, tailgate and wheelarches fettled, work that would have necessitated having the repaired areas blended in with the car’s original paintwork - and given the vendor is something of a perfectionist, he elected to have the whole lot resprayed, including the lower trim panels and rear bumper.

Only done recently, the Range Rover still looks minty fresh – but then the resprayed paintwork was machine polished and detailed before having new/old stock decals fitted. These were already part of the owner’s collection of memorabilia; impossible to find now, he’s even throwing in another set, so you’ll have spares for the future…
The end result is a vehicle that looks just as it would have done out in Australia all those years ago including a Warn 9.5Ti winch up front, a receiver hitch and recovery point at the back, light guards at both ends, a Mantec underbody protection underneath, and a Safety Devices roof rack up top.
The latter is also fitted with the correct lights and spare wheel/tyre – and tracking these all down shouldn’t be under-estimated given the passage of the best part of two decades since it was built.

Incredibly the six-spoke, 19-inch alloy wheels are even fitted with the correct G4 event-spec 255/55R19 Goodyear Wrangler MTR tyres. A mightily impressive achievement, and one that goes to the very heart of how well this vehicle has been restored and maintained.
As we will never tire of explaining, our experience shows that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly. Their presence does not, of course, preclude the need for a thorough inspection - something the vendor would welcome, by the way – but it does perhaps give you a shortcut into their attitude towards maintenance.
A second set of mint MTR tyres are available as a separate transaction, as are a variety of genuine G4 event memorabilia such as tents, bikes and other collectables.
On the Inside

The electrically adjustable and heated front leather seats look terrific. Only very gently creased, they adjust and heat as they should and are as supportive and comfortable as you’d expect of a vehicle with luxury and adventure running through its DNA.

The vendor also has a set of new/old stock leather seat-base covers. These have never fitted as the original seat covers are still in a great condition. These are included in the sale in case the seats ever need recovering.

The rear seats are good too, and much of the rest of the interior trim (all of it, in fact, except that fitted around the gear lever) has been replaced, which means that it is in genuine showroom condition.

Modifications carried out by the factory in preparation for the event include a load space guard and a dual sat-nav system, both of which are present and correct. NOTE: the sat nav has been updated to a touch screen/Bluetooth unit, but the car comes with an original head unit. A CB radio unit and brackets, plus an antenna, also come with the car.

Faults? Nothing says the vendor. But then you could probably have predicted that, couldn’t you?

Underneath
The majority of the service jobs were, we are told, carried out using genuine Land Rover parts rather than the cheaper aftermarket stuff most people opt for to save a few quid.
This work includes a service, work to the braking system and suspension with invoices from Cam-Tech Land Rovers and Cotswold Motor Services to prove it. The aim was to have a car that wasn’t just pretty enough to be displayed, but also capable of being driven anywhere – and we do mean anywhere – without further preparation or notice. It’s already been driven in Corsica, Spain, Belgium, France - and the school run.

Note: it was serviced by Paragon Fleet Solutions Ltd, who are JLR’s internal fleet outlet, because the previous owner was Paragon Fleet Solutions’ manager, so it’s probably fair to assume that no expenses was spared - and only JLR parts would have been used.

• 16.01.2014 – full post-purchase inspection and service at Service 4x4, including the replacement of all filters and all fluid changed including that in the engine, gearbox, transfer box, and front and rear differentials using Land Rover fluids and parts
• 23.12.2015 – annual inspection and service at Service 4x4, including filters and fluid replacements for the engine and front and rear differentials using Land Rover fluids and parts at 79,996 miles
• 11.11.2016 – service, fresh coolant, and Waxoyl treatment by Cam-Tech Land Rover at a cost of £896
• 24.11.2016 – new Land Rover battery at a cost of £165
• 09.03.2017 – a full brake refurbishment plus miscellaneous fettling by Cam-Tech Land Rover at a cost of £1,618

The underside is not only protected by a three-piece Mantec underbody but it is also ridiculously clean and solid. This kit is, we are told, “as rare as hen’s teeth” since only 30 were made back-in-the-day. The same can be said of the roof rack, which is the exact G4-spec item that Safety Devices made for LRSV for the competition; it most definitely is not the more widely available Land Rover accessory roof rack.
The vendor tells us that the vehicle drives as it should, which is no surprise given the vast expenditure over the years.
As for the engine bay, this is wonderfully detailed and looks amazing.
History Highlights
The Range Rover’s MOT certificate is valid until July 2021. It was gained without a single advisory point, and the car has only done around 300 miles since then, 200 of which were to Goodwood and back.
It has a number of expired MOT certificates and road tax discs plus a sheaf of invoices and bills to confirm the work that has been done to it over the years. It is offered with a G4 certificate of authenticity and membership card
There are also many magazine articles showing the Range Rover competing plus many more detailing its maintenance and recommissioning. This includes the replacement of all air springs and dampers plus the last service, which was performed 300 miles ago. This included changing the engine oil and filter, along with the oil in the transfer gearbox and differentials, and new genuine Land Rover sparkplugs rocker cover seals by Cotswolds Motoring Services.

NB: The Range Rover is registered on French numberplates at the moment in anticipation of being sold on the continent. Should the new owner want to registered it here, this would be a very straightforward job given that it was previously on the DVLA’s records.
What We Think
One of only 30 ever built, this genuine right-hand-drive G4 Range Rover is almost certainly the very best of its type left, something that’s reflected in its insurance valuation of £27,500.
And yet, even this tells only part of the story as this was its value BEFORE the most recent work, work that has brought it up to genuine museum quality with a respray, extensive mechanical fettling - and being fitted with those unobtanium genuine G4 decals.
So, how much do we think it’s going to sell for? Frankly, who knows? Our best guess is somewhere between £20,000 and £30,000 but who knows where it’s going to end? After all, if you’re something of a completist, you aren’t going to want to miss out on one of the most interesting and rare Range Rovers in the world, are you?
Speaking of which, if you’re thinking of bidding, please don’t forget that we’re selling the vendor’s Range Rover P38 TReK too, and given how little your savings will be earning at the moment, frankly we can’t think of a better pair of Range Rovers to shift your money into for a few years…
