It’s almost a ticket to print money.
Same as insurance approved body shops.
The price they charge the insurance company is far in excess of the cost to complete the job. The workmanship is often poor at best.

Warranty companies seem to be a bit more switched on.

I become very cross when I hear about these sorts of things and the approach the insurance industry takes.

It's fair enough that they expect you to pay a higher premium to account for the higher value (and higher repair costs) of a FFRR but it really annoys me when they then expect you to accept inferior non-genuine components or work from their "approved" suppliers. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

On another occasion another example. I needed a repair after someone reversed into my offside wing. I was stationary in the car part and made my claim. Other driver luckily insured so no problem there. However when I insisted the repair carried out by my local main dealer they withdrew the curtesy car! Still the right decision but why not put it into the policy? Big Cry

A friend of mine owns a large bodyshop in London, it used to be as you say but these days there is an insurance company schedule that states the prices all insurance companies will pay for repairs, they are very detailed, parts are at MLP and each panel of each car has a price for replacement and the cost of sundries down to the penny, it's much tighter than it was...

A neighbour ran into my daughters car a few years ago, it was parked on the road, his insurance company paid, they fitted a pattern bumper, I complained and they said that the insurance company insisted they use one, I phoned the ins company and complained and they fitted a genuine one... they do seem to be trying to reduce costs but at our loss and their increased profits... Pete

Finally got to the bottom of this...

Admiral have just sent me a cheque for £960 for me to get a local firm to fit the correct screen...

It turns out Autoglass had been supplying a screen to the specification of the original, BUT, although they were using the same windscreen code as Pilkington etc, the specification they had written down against this number was different to everyone else and didn't include the IR,UV coating...!!! So a clerical error...

The only good point is Admiral waved my windscreen excess... Thumbs Up Pete

There is a one man band in Hull, he has the correct glass sat on his shelf, I have seen it with my own eyes, identical to mine, Pilkington made, just no Land Rover logo... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Pete

Glad you got this sorted, what a carry on!

I need a new screen in my van (luckily not one of the RR's), can't say I'm looking forward to it, everytime I've had a screen previously fitted something has been wrong from damaged paintwork to wind-noise and leaks.

I'm just over the bridge from you (and previously in South Cave). if I send you a PM could you kindly let me know the name of your one man band? I'd much prefer to use him than any of the big faceless organisations. Plus the screen will probably cost about the same as my windscreen excess anyway!

A few years ago I had a 78 Corvette which needed a new screen , Autoglass turns up and the first thing he says is I normally work on Fords and Vauxhall , so after much hesitation he took the screen out but I stopped him trying to fit the replacement as he didn’t appear to have a clue. So much like yourself after lots of phone calls they sent me a cheque to pay for specialist to come and fit the screen. Obviously the car had classic car insurance so you would assume they would use specialists in the first place. Glad you boy yours sorted. 2004 vogue

I had to have a replacement fitted to an old 3 series a few years ago. They came out and fitted it on a saturday afternoon and advised not to drive until the sunday morning to allow everything to set. Fine by me, had no plans anyway. Roll on Monday lunchtime and i was going to work, pulled off my drive and bang, the windscreen cracked from the NS bottom corner right up to behind the rearview mirror.

Called and informed them only to be told i must have driven it too soon, i told them come and check the mileage as it is exactly the same as your fitter quoted. Had countless arguements with them and ended up having to threaten the insurance company with the ombudsman to get it sorted.

However they also did the screen in my type r a few weeks ago and could not fault them. Very quick, cleaned up after himself and even put trim restorer on the roof and scuttle trims when putting it back together.

Would you believe it... I went to the TDV8 Rangie yesterday and the screen has cracked in the cold weather.

Now I need 2 windscreens Rolling Eyes

Looks like there was a small chip and water has frozen in it. I hadn't even noticed the chip before.

What should I mention when I ring the insurance company / speak to the glass company regarding a replacement to reduce the chances of having the issues mentioned above? This is what's printed on the current one:

The damage... Confused

I would email that pic to the insurer / glass company so they can see what you have. Looks like a heated acoustic pilkington screen, and is an original screen or has been replaced by a dealer, as it’s virtually unheard of to have the LR logo on a replacement fitted by a car glass fitter through an insurance payout and who doesn’t have glass cover!

I would also specifically ask for a Pilkington screen There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

D3Jon, well your windscreen is the same spec as the one Autoglass wanted to fit to mine so if you use them, they do have screens... Thumbs Up

You can't make this up, the local place that had a screen in stock were going to fit it yesterday, he got it off the shelf to bring only to find it had a scratch across it....

Robin at Duckworths to the rescue, he located the last genuine screen in the country and will have it Monday... what's the betting it turns up smashed...!!!

I will be picking it up from him to save another courier trip if it gets to him OK......! Pete
