So, today saw both of the heads rebuilt temporarily so that we could set the valve clearances.

The inlets valves need to be between 7 and 8 thousandths of an inch (thou), and exhaust valves need to be between 9 and 10 thousandths of an inch (thou).

Most of my valves are sitting at 5 thou, and a few are at 6 thou. It looks like I'm going to need 32 new tappets (or buckets as they're often referred to) to get this thing back into spec.

I set about trying to work out the valve clearances this afternoon.

The tolerances aren't much at all:

Inlet valves: 0.18 to 0.22mm or 0.007 - 0.009in (7 - 8 thousandths of an inch).
Exhaust valves: 0.23 - 0.27mm or 0.009 - 0.010in (9 - 10 thousandths of an inch).

For the inlet valves I've aimed for 0.20mm and the exhaust valves I've aimed for 0.25mm to give me them both slap bang in the middle.

On my diagram below the top line is the current tappet size, the middle line is the current clearance and the bottom line is the tappet size required to give the right clearance.

Here's how I worked them all out using Excel:

Just need to send the list of parts to LR tomorrow and hope that they're all still available and not obsolete now!

Out of the 32 needed, only 10 of them match to the ones I currently have so I might as well order a complete new set I reckon.

You can't wait - How do you think I feel Laughing Laughing Last time I drove this car was on the 13th February 2022 when I drove it into the workshop. Big Cry

Setting the valve clearances on this is a Censored of a job to be honest... I thought I'd worked it out last night and moved some of the tappets about to where I thought they should go and still wasn't getting the numbers right.

The exhaust valves I was hoping to see between 9 and 10 thou of clearances on them. After crunching my numbers I'm fairly sure I've gone from 4.5 thou to 8 thou.

There's 50 difference tappet sizes available from Land Rover and they increase in 0.005mm increments. They're also 8 quid each so when you need 32 of them it'll get expensive if your measurements aren't right.

The guy I bought my cams from has a huge amount of experience doing this on these engines and also carries an extensive selection of tappets in stock so I'm giving serious consideration to taking him both heads and 4 cams and paying him to do this job so I know they're right when I refit the heads.
The only thing stopping me jumping in with both feet is the fact that I've done every other job on this car myself and am at the point where I don't want to admit defeat Laughing

He's on the North Wales border not far from Chester so it'd be a nice trip away for a couple of days too Smile

Your posts make brilliant reading Sir Bow down I know exactly what you mean regarding the tappets, or as I call them shims, did a set on an old Rover SD1 V8 for a friend, never again, it was a nightmare at the time. I worked out what to order, gave him all the clearances etc on paper, which he promptly lost Thud

As for sending the heads to near Chester, I was in Glasgow most of last week, if it had been this week, I could have delivered them for you, as it's on my doorstep. Bad luck or bad timing Whistle You will have to excuse my bad pun, I'll get my coat......

Cheers Merchy Smile

The cams didn't arrive till Friday unfortunately Big Cry

The place I'll be taking them to is Sandycroft in Deeside. They want the heads for 2 days to set the clearances properly around some other jobs they'll likely have in at the time so I'll have a day or two to waste when I do get down.

The chap is in and out of the office and has some holidays between now and 6th July so I likely won't be able to get down before 6th July to get them done which is a bit of a pain.

Out of all the cars I own I'm currently running out! My C6 is waiting for AutoGlass to get a new windscreen for it at the moment, and my XFR is waiting for tyres after a pothole took out 2 of the Pilot Sport 4S's on it on Saturday, and my XM and Xantia are both still under their covers and haven't been MOT'd this year so I'll need to either get a windscreen or tyres before making the trip down. Rolling Eyes

Where in North Wales do you live?

I thought I was having car trouble Shocked my commiserations Sir, sounds like it's all go at your household !!!

I live in Wrexham, it's only about 13 /15 miles from Sandycroft, If you are booking a hotel, there are quite a number in Chester / area close by. I am due back at sea once I have some other courses out of the way, I was at Glasgow Airport for fire training and Greenock for the water stuff, life boats and rescue boats.

I MAY still be home when you pop down, if so, it would be great to meet up for a jar or two if you so wished.
If you do, send me a PM, if it goes unanswered it will mean that I am away, on the way to a vessel or at sea!! Thumbs Up

PS - I found out that there are two types of weather they have at Greenock, type 1 - It's raining, type 2 - It's going to rain Rolling with laughter Rob.

Your doing well with this, I'm still chasing random cold start misfires and odd misfires on normal running no logic to it all. There is no way I would be doing this to my 4.2 engine.....Still on the plus side my 4.4 m62 is almost back together.

If you were in Greenock and drove down the A8/M8 you were literally 30 seconds (well 2 minutes) from us. Weโ€™re 8 miles from Greenock.

Typical, eh! Laughing

You live in a lovely part of the world, I stayed at the Golden Jubilee Hotel, quite nice inside, rooms have been refurbished. I already know the area a little as my company has an office in Clydebank.
all I will say is - 'Clydebank seems to be an interesting place' Whistle Rolling with laughter

Brilliant write up and lesson in mission creep ๐Ÿ˜€.

On my yamaha FJ1200 they use the same system of shims/buckets. To save buying new you can usually swap them around and only have to buy a couple. I like your spreadsheet and will copy next time I do mine. I think you have a couple you could swap.

Keep it up, really enjoying this thread.
