I wanted to do a write up on this but i just do not have the time and the supplying dealer is paying for labour so it is in the shop now. but i do know this is what they are doing

1) strip out headlamps
2) remove fromt bumper
3) remove front impact panel
4) drain coolant
5) remove top and bottom rad hoses
6) remove intercooler hoses
7) remove both inter cooler and rad (leaving the aircon rad connected)
remove shroud around fan top and bottom
9) now have access to front of engine to change all pullies, belts & tensioners and in my case i elected for new water pump
10) re-assemble
11) add coolant and purge

seems like a lot of work 6hrs is what has been agreed. i know the chap who is doing mine and he claims for him it is the best way to get the job done. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Annoyingly our car hasn't even reached 23k miles yet. It started squeaking before and we had a new tensioner fitted when it was in for a service after the dealer diagnosed it. It quietened it down for a few months and the noise is back with a vengeance.

It's only present when the car is cold though, once it's warmed up it's silent. Same as the SC too actually.

It's on the "round to it" list and seeing as the car won't be used until the salt has gone there's no desperate rush I guess.

I don’t think it’s necessary to pull the headlights and radiator to change the belts and tensioners etc., although it would clearly provide excellent access. This video’s quite good:



Will be doing mine shortly, so haven’t been on the spanners for this yet.

Quick note David, the 4.4SDV8 uses a stretch belt so you need a special belt tool to fit the belt... Just incase you were unaware sir

Fanders mine is 4.4TDV8 not as much room. I have been told and indeed the garage it is in knows it can be done but he says the extra hours work for strip down is worth it for the access!! 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Definitely no need to remove the front end on the 4.2 and from what I've read, I don't think it is on the 4.4 either.

On my 4.2 I've got the viscous fan and the fan shroud removed and it's given me more then enough room to get everything off and back on without any hassle.

That bracket that holds the vicious fan that is visible in Fanders thumnbnail I could not get the bearings out of. I had it in a hydraulic press and it would not budge. That's the only bit I had to replace with a genuine one.

Thanks Craig, I wasn't aware the belt on the 4.4 was a stretch one. Is that the same on the 4.4 TDV8 and SDV8? I'll do some more digging before going near it and make sure I've got the tool to do it.

It certainly makes jobs very easy. Doing brakes and things at chest height is far easier then sitting on the floor.

Problem is, you start buying broken Range Rovers because they're easy to work on!

Do you have any recommendation for tools to remove the viscous fan, David? I see Powerful UK do a fan pulley holder p/n LRT146-CL for the RRS 4.2 supercharged, but I'm not sure if it will work on the L322 4.2? There seem to be so many generic fan pulley holders, I'm not sure which one to get that will work well and be good quality. I also need to get a 36mm spanner as well.

That's the tool that I bought and used. The 36mm spanner from my P38 set fitted the fan but the other half was too big to hold the pulley so I only needed that one tool thankfully.

One thing I will say is make sure that you get it square and keep it square. Mine moved as my fan was so tight and it's bruised the tool as it seems to be made from quite soft metal. Mine wouldn't come off around the fan nut, I had to remove the fan and then take the spanner off due to the bruising on it.

I've cleaned it up with a file and it'll be fine but the set I've had for years for doing P38 fans have been battered with lump hammers and abused and still look as good as the day I bought them so I was a little disappointed.

However, delivery was very quick from PowerfulUK and has been with the other bits I've bought from them since.

Now the weekend is here I'm hoping to get mine pretty much finished this weekend. I've got a replacement Supercharger to go on. The bearings in mine are noisy and Powerhouse can't look at it for around a month as the parts they need aren't available yet so I got a used one with a 6 month warranty on it for 300 quid. I'm inpatient so ordered it!
