Bad Wind Noise ? Top of dash ?

Not sure if any of you can help here.

I am now finding that at speeds around 50mph and above, that there is some weird air flow noise, which increases with speed.

It's not engine rpm related, as far as I can tell. It makes you want to put the wipers on to see if it changes. That type of noise. Sort of bottom of windscreen.......you put your hand on top of the dash to see if that helps......sort of centre speaker.........

Can't explain any better. Its like the air passing through the vents is causing the racket.

I am thinking it may be a flap on the ventilation system thats not where it should be, or a motor on the vents has jammed, if they can do that.

The trim at the bottom of the screen etc all look to be fastened down properly...........

Slow down to a slower speed and all is well..........

Sorry its a weird one, but its really annoying.

Thanks

Thanks gents.

It has only just started doing it, so I don't think its anything done historically, if you see what I mean.

Only got the car on Friday, definately was fine until Monday............I would have noticed it.

The garage I got it from have got to fix a knock on the suspension, so I'll get them to have a look.......

Got a 250 mile drive tomorrow. On the M1, so am sure it won't be annoying - much !!

Cheers

Well. half way through the rather "windy" 250 mile M1 trip yesterday, I had a quick look under the bonnet at a services. Couldn't see anything obvious - there was no cover/soundproofing near the intake on the underside of the bonnet, so you can see all the washer fluid pipes etc. Had a quick look on the internet and it seems there may not be one there anyway.

The front of the scuttle, which rests on top of the pollen filter box with the tabs sticking up, would lift up a bit if you tried. I did wonder whether it was that vibrating.

I pressed some of the tabs and closed the bonnet, though it looks like there is nothing to sit in the tabs and hold them down.

I now get the noise at a higher speed now, and for a while it was only in the passenger corner of the windscreen bottom. Its now back towards the middle.

I think its definately somethin in that area rather than inside the dash...

Sounds like a bee is stuck in there.

I've now tidied up the wires around the battery, and put some black tape on near the scuttle edge to pollon filter box.....Not been out again yet.

I'll keep you posted in case an eventual fix helps anyone else.

Still strange !!

That complete unit is held on with some nuts and bolts, maybe it requires them to be tightened up if it's moving about

I had this - it was the screen scuttle trim - the bit of black plastic that runs the length of the screen

slightly warped with age, and got more and more noisy as you got faster

try putting a strip of tape along the edge where screen and plastic meets and fasten it down tight - if the noise goes away, then youve found your problem

you can try refitting or bodge a re-seal of it with some black silicone etc, but to be honest, it was £40 for a new one, so thats what I fitted and its been fine since cheers

Warped with age !! I know that feeling well...........

Many thanks, will investigate that.

Various bits of tape and tie wrapping wires near battery made no difference......

Cheers

Well, many thanks.

After taping up at the screen edge below the wipers, where it meets the scuttle, and taping the bottom of the A pillar trim on the drivers side, the problem has been resolved.

The A pillar trim can be pulled up at the bottom, and you can see the yellow clip behind it.

I shall investigate towards a permanent fix, so it'll be fastening the A pillar trim on properly, or a new scuttle rubber seal.

Thanks again

I drove around for a couple of weeks with a big strip of silver gaffa tape on the screen/scuttle panel edge ...it did the trick until the new bit arrived but looked a bit naff Smile cheers

I had the same problem with mine but fixed it without any tape.

The scuttle had been refitted with the tabs forced in behind the filter box rather than sitting on it which had caused them to snap. This meant there was nothing pushing the trim up tight against the windscreen.

I made 3 plastic blocks of the appropriate thickness and slid these between the scuttle and airbox, then glued them into place with a weak adhesive. Strong glue wasn't needed as the pressure holds them in place I just didn't want them to shake or slide loose.

This pushed the trim up tight against the windscreen and the noise has never come back.

I'll post up some pictures if needed.

Many thanks.

The A pillar trim will be resecured with new clips tomorrow.

If the problem persists, a new scuttle will be purloined.......

Cheers
