Over tightened Wheel lugs

OK so went to remove one of the rear wheels and as the title says i cannot budge the locking wheel nut!!
had a 4ft bar on and stopped as worried i will shear it off or break locking nut removal tool. spent over an hour with no joy.

So i am now squirting WD40 down the back of it every couple of hours in hope this will help. I have not applied any heat yet as i do not want to knacker the wheel finish though this is looking like i will have no choice.

Any words of wisdom? Bow down 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

You might be better off with a proper penetrating fluid, WD40 is OK but it was never designed as a penetrating fluid as such. I'd agree not to go to far with trying to get the nut undone, especially as the locking tools tend not to be the strongest. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

Hot air gun or even hair dyer might work without damaging paint. Thumbs Up

Take it down your local tyre shop, they get this all the time and are "usually" very good at getting them off...

Believe it or not a rattle gun is very good at getting them off, if you take it gentle the rattle effect will loosen the bolt, hopefully before the nut or locking key break,.

If it does break they will have some tools to get the rest of the nut off without damage to the wheel...

I do 99.9% of the work on my fatty but there are some things best left to the professionals with their tools and most importantly, their knowledge....

Get it done now while you can still drive it and before you get a flat...

Driving it home with 4 wheel nuts will be fine.

Good Luck Thumbs Up Pete

Agree with Craig; any thief will laugh at those locking wheel nuts....usually the only person they delay/prevent removing the wheel, is the owner Wink

Cheers

After a tragic experience with a Volvo XC60 locker, I always replace them with plain nuts... Fun fact: Range Rover ones cost more than twice than Jaguar's! 2019 Vogue P400e

Yep, having owned a D3 Disco where the locking wheel nut broke and just kept spinning when I was doing a wheel swap I am firmly in the “get rid of them” camp.

It took me 1.5 hours to finally get the locking wheel nut off on my driveway with a garage full of tools. I would have hated to imagine if it was 11 o’clock at night in the freezing rain on a small road on Dartmoor what it would have been like....

The first thing I did when I brought home Sylvia was to replace them with normal wheel nuts.

Jim

^^^ This. There are many examples of the LR OEM lockers failing, resulting in a nightmare to remove and potentially damage to the wheel. Not what you want when you're at the side of the road with a flat.

As per Jim's post above, one of the first jobs I also did on my L405 when I bought it was to remove the lockers and replace all the nuts as some were swollen. Also did the same on my old L320. Kev

In my case the problem was not the locker it was that some Censored had well over tightened them not just the locker all of them on that wheel. In all my working on cars i have NEVER come across a wheel nut a 5ft bar would not free off it was insane.
Still there off now threads cleaned up and wheel back on torqued to the correct setting.

And yes all the lockers are going ordered a set of wheel nuts today Thumbs Up 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

A Trap

If you have this problem again try slightly tightening the other four wheel nuts to release some pressure on the tight one.

Also never buzz gun the locking wheel nut, do this one by hand then torque first at 10% less torque than the others, then do the other four wheel nuts to full torque with out going back to the locking wheel nut, always means this one isn’t over tightened which can happen if tightened last.

Lastly, throw the locking wheel nuts in the bin... even if you can’t get the locking wheel nut off, thief’s can... easily and quickly, they are a waste of time and only cause issues. Just run normal wheel nuts all round 👍

Great advice, they’re a pain in the bum and get stuck when you least expect them to.
