2005 Range Rover Autobiography Td6 Zambezi Silver
Td6 viscous fan removal..

Had my Td6 a few weeks now and overall am really pleased with it, other than the damm amount of noise it makes, when pulling away or accelerating it sounds really loud and almost like its slipping. I'm thinking it is probably the viscous fan, does removing this quieten the td6 down alot? Are there any other measures I can take to make it as quiet as possible (buying a tdv8 doesn't count) haha

Does your aircon work? If so, remove the viscous for the winter... The aircon fan works when the temps go up BUT... ONLY if the aircon works Thumbs Up

Has it got a performance air filter? If so, there is quite a bit more induction noise when accelerating.

Worth a check....

I wonder if you can fit more sound deadening under the bonnet ?

Don't think the fan is that noisy on mine. Only when it stays engaged occasionally. Had a new one under warranty. Not as bad. At staying engaged - new one same noise level when engaged....

Hi guys, yes my air con works a treat and leave that on all the time. Im sure it must be the viscous fan making most of the racket i think next week i will have a go at getting it off and then see if its any better without, will perhaps do a coolant change and flush at the same time so that i know its done then.

The air filter is just a standard one as i just replaced it myself a couple of weeks back, good idea on the sound deadening and on the bulk head also might help a bit possibly.

If it sounds like a small airplane engine then the viscous fan has likely locked up as the unit fails.

I and a few others have our fans removed on the TD6 and you could likely get away with on the tdv8's as well. They really are for countries that don't ever drop below about 10-15c at their coldest. Even when it gets hot here the electric fan can move more than enough air and works when the engine is off as well. When they are at full speed it's as load if not louder than the viscous fan and does its job well. Just leave the ac on all the time and enjoy fresher cleaner air(replace the filter every 6-12 months though!) and be done with it. It saps power and economy although I haven't noticed much improvement with it off from before it failed.


You can get replacement viscous units so keep and reuse the fan itself but they still are about £130-160 iirc. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I recently purchased a 03 TD6. I have realised a previous owner had already removed the Viscous Fan on mine.
It runs fine, currently, but it is the middle of winter. I am only doing rural short journeys.
I have not specifically tested the air conditioning yet, so I don’t know if the electric fan works yet.

How many members out there in the U.K., permanently runs TD6 without the Viscous fan?

I had owned my old 4.4 V8 petrol for a few years before I realised that the viscous fan had been removed by a previous owner Rolling Eyes
I took it from 49000 miles to 147000 without one. 2017 Jaguar F Pace 25t Portfolio - still part of the JLR family 😀

Interesting. If anything I would think a petrol V8 would need one more than anything?
Did you use it all the year round including hot summer days 25-30c? Sat in traffic jams? Towing?
All the possible hardest situations for a cooling system.

Yes, all year round for 9 years with no issues as a result. Very little towing until the last couple of years when it pulled an Ifor horse trailer a couple of dozen times but still didn’t throw up any problems. A bit of both winter and summer but mainly good weather. In the time I had the cari don’t think the temperature gauge moved any higher then the middle point. As I said, I may have been very lucky so don’t take it as a recommendation as the fan is there for a reason - it just wasn’t on my car Laughing 2017 Jaguar F Pace 25t Portfolio - still part of the JLR family 😀

I was wondering how common it was that people removed them. I guess the fact there’s forum posts on if, relatively common?
I thought mine got up to running temp very quickly for a diesel. My TD5 disco takes 4x longer to get to temp. 2007 L322 TDV8 3.6 Vogue SE
