potential purchase help needed please

I am very interest in a buying a 07 3.6tv8

The current owner says it had a loss of power and now cranks and runs but dies straight away. He handily got it to someone with diagnostics. I will attach them and hopefully you might be able to offer some theories why it wont stay alive

Any helps or tips would be most appreciated

Thanks in advance

It's near impossible to diagnose this kind of thing remotely I'm afraid. The fault codes are usually the symptom of an issue, not the root cause.

From the fault codes listed, there's probably a few things to check:

1. Faulty water in fuel sensor and/or change the fuel filter. Approx £60 for a new filter and salvage sensor

2. The remaining PCM faults seem to indicate a charged air leak. This could be a split intake manifold and/or boost hoses... all common failures on these engines. Approx £500 for a new manifold and hoses

3. MAF sensor on right side or MAP sensor. Approx £150 for new/salvage sensors

However, be very careful - I can't see how number 2 would cause the engine to stall, although entirely possible from a dirty fuel filter and potentially possible from a faulty MAF or MAP.

I would also do all the usual things - check for water contamination in the oil, take off a charge hose and look at the gunk in there and on the throttle body, put a sniff tester on the coolant etc.

If you're in Surrey, my advice would be to consult with the owner and ask if you can get a mechanic to look over it, limp it over to Glenrands (if the vehicle is in or near Surrey also) and spend a few hundred on a specialist opinion. It could save you thousands - there are many other possible causes including injectors, timing, crank, split block etc that can't be diagnosed online.

The other thing I'd advise - unless you're a home mechanic, walk away. There's usually a reason someone hasn't had a fault resolved, and that's because they know it's a big/expensive one. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Hi Jon,

The key question is what price is it?

There are a glut of these vehicles for sale but finding a good one is the more challenging problem. I spent what I thought was the “top end” for mine and I’ve still put a couple of grand into it to get it as sorted as it can be. I got caught out with inner sill rot which had been hidden by a dodgy MOT, the outer sills looked good. It’s done two trips to eastern Poland this year (including through the snow) and hasn’t missed a beat, although it still has a few ongoing niggles.

This is going to come down to what your budget is for both buying the car and running it annually. I would suggest that you have to budget £1k per year unless you are doing all the work yourself. The simple reality is that these cars are fantastic to own but they do break, a comprehensive service history, I don’t mean just servicing but proof that things have been fixed over time, will be your best friend in finding one that has been loved. Ultimately it’s a 15 year old car so expect a bit of “painting the forth bridge syndrome”.

All that said, they are brilliant cars and my recent 3,500 mile trip to Poland was a joy and I wouldn’t have done it in any other car.

J

Thanks for the very sound advice gentleman. I was after a little spring project and am fairly handy with some spanners and a youtube tutorial Smile But really dont want to et into replacing a whole engine.

I suppose its just that any of these symptoms or issues could be down to something relatively easy to fix or a complete nightmare..

I think I am just going to look for a good one with history and be prepared to do some preventative work as well as sorting issues..

I do appreciate your guidance and if anyone surrey direction is upgrading or selling theirs drop me a message

Thanks again

Jon

Best places to find an honest motor are on this site in the for sale section, or by searching Auto Trader for private sales - look for people who've owned the car for 3+ years, look for provenance they've cared for it - even receipts for a tyre puncture repair are good signs it's been well looked after.

You also want proof the vehicle has been serviced at least every 10,000 miles. Regular oil changes on these vehicles are vital (also just reminded myself mine needs an oil change - invest in a Draper oil vacuum pump. Opie Oils and Smith & Allen are favourites on this site for good quality affordable oil and filters). 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
