One thing that improved the ride of my car, very much, was changing both engine mounts. Depending on your mileage etc. It was not obvious to change them, no obvious sign - plain preventative. However, handling is way better, ride is way smoother. Might help you too! Fuji White 2011, 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

My theory is if I can reflash the ADCM on the choppy car to have the previous strategy it may ride the same... Next step is to email GAP team and see if this is possible.

I've previously applied back level updates using my BBS Faultmate which I haven't used since getting an IIDtool so I've just grabbed both updates from the BBS site in case you find a distinct improvement. The updates are for use with the Faultmate, not the IIDtool.

I'm still enjoying the magic carpet ride since fixing the poor wiring connection to the front height sensor a good few months back. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

ADCM - update from GAP

That is interesting Graeme - please can you give me some more details/links to how I can obtain the back update from BBS?

I emailed Patrick at GAP, the Assembly/Strategy relate to the firmware within the ADCM.

And he seems to think a reflash to older version "Can not be done"... which is a little frustrating. I'm sure this is a software/firmware issue its clear to see that for the same section of road one car is reducing the amps to the dampers and the other isn't.

It transpires that the BBS flash file loader which loads the flash file onto the Faultmate requires SQL Server Compact 3.5 but 3.5 won't run on Win 10, instead requiring 4.0. 3.5 doesn't install on Win 10 and with 4.0 installed the flash file loader still fails due to not finding 3.5. The Faultmate has long since been superseded by the Nanocom which is similar to the IIDtool rather than the old Faultmate. Hence I consider the Faultmate option isn't available unless I can get it to run on my Win7 VM, which I'll investigate when I have more time.

The BBS updates are only available to registered Faultmate users and the file is extremely unlikely to be compatible with the IIDtool.

With my previous back-level updates, the Faultmate has asked if the back-level module is really required to be loaded prior to proceeding. Hence there doesn't appear to be any reason why the IIDtool can't do the same unless its programmed to not allow it.

My L322 is April 12 build and AFAIR the damper module has always been at the latest -AH level.

I have used the IIDtool to recalibrate to get more life out of worn shocks then to recalibrate again with new shocks that were far too firm on the worn shock calibrations.

On another check I found that SQL Compact 3.5 is still available and now with both the 32 bit and 64 bit components installed, I have successfully loaded both the -AG and -AH versions onto the faultmate MSV-2. However, I don't know if my last recalibrations after fitting new shocks will be reset to factory by reloading the s/w, which I wouldn't mind anyway, so I might reload -AH for a couple of days before trying the -AG version.

My GG AT3 255/60R19 tyres are firmer than usual and now with Meyle HD BMW X5 bushes fitted to the rear arms of the front suspension instead of the standard LR018345 bushes, the ride is quite harsh on my farm off-road driveway so I should be in the position to notice any ride differences. The HD bushes are on trial and will be removed if I get sick of the harshness.

My Faultmate MSV-2 prepares the file to be loaded but then doesn't offer the write menu option to write to the ecu for either the current AH version or the earlier AG version. As no error messages indicating that either the AH version is already installed or that the AG version is earlier than the installed version, I suspect that the tool's programming to write to this ecu wasn't tested/debugged.

The tool wasn't initially programmed for the 4.4TDV8 engine which was subsequently provided in conjunction with my testing various updates and I suspect that writing updated s/w to the damper module hadn't previously been attempted by any user so the shortcoming had not previously been encountered. At the time, the BBS Faultmate programmer had moved-on so updates had stopped, with all new development being for the Nanocom.

Back to the IIDtool...

Update on Assembly/Strategy

While I was not able to backward update the AD module I was able to buy a used one on ebay that was removed from a 2010 vehicle with Adaptive Dynamics. Part number AH42-18B008-AE (remember previously the car that rode smoothly was an early 60 plate car on an AH42-18B008-AG)

I used the gap tool to read the ECU data again - it confirmed that the older version of the AD module had been registered. Went for a drive... no difference at all, the signals going to the adaptive dampers were broadly similar so I feel confident in ruling out the Firmware/Software on the Adaptive Dynamics module. next step - it's got to be something on the input side - either ride height sensor or accelerometer.

Choppy-Car went in for it's MOT the other day - I noticed that one of the ride height sensors on the back was not securely attached to the lower rear suspension arm - fair amount of play in it. I wouldn't be surprised if this was having a good jiggle around on rough roads and causing mayhem on the input side of the ADCM. Hoping that a replacement here will have me sorted. will report back!

It’s still not quite right after the ride height sensor.

Interestingly I went to pick up a set of wheels the other day which I loaded into the boot - I feel like the extra weight at the back helped to settle the ride. Possibly this points to something at the back of the car.

I'm back to the forum after a bit of a break, and its a shame there is still no "smoking gun" on this issue.

However, after reading the above posts I'm going to look at changing the rear subframe bushes. All other bushes are new(ish) so willing to give that a go.
The engine mounts is intriguing. Whilst happy to change those if needed, I cannot see how they would related to the ride of the car? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Yes sorry I’ve not been able to give the “smoking gun” answer - my next step was going to be rear subframe bushes as well - will report back when I have time!
