Gearbox / non starting issue (Solved)

Hi All
Hi guys recently purchased a very very cheap 2004 l322 3.0 diesel, slapped a battery in and it fired up perfectly (Checked it moved back and forth on the drive) since then i have been on a cleaning / fixing rampage. i decided the other day it was time to fix the central locking remote so i got the key synced and could then lock and unlock (here is were the issues started). as soon as i did that the car would no longer start, i purchased a copy of land rover SDD (never got it working) after some advice from a friend i picked up a cheap BMW code reader and it read 100 million errors on the car

cleared everything i could but still no start, checked the code reader and it says the starter is not enabled because the gearbox isnt in park or neutral

then i noticed that the gear selection was no longer showing on the dash

and its also showing as always being in sport mode (guess that is the manual selection), ran a quick test on the instrument cluster just to check it wasn't the lights being odd and they all came on

the gearbox is showing no errors so im not quite sure were to go from here, someone did tell me to check the XYZ switch on the side of the gearbox but i dont think this model has one (couldn't see any switch on the gearbox near the linkage)
any ideas?
thanks

You have the GM 5L40-E transmission, so the inhibitor/xyz switch is inside the transmission.

It may be worth checking the cable adjustment and also disconnecting the 20-pin plug at the back of the transmission and checking the condition of the pins.

Would have been nice if it was just a cable adjustment issue. Anyway, you need to get the switch continuity tested next, which is probably easiest to check at the ECU end rather than from underneath the vehicle at the 20-pin connector.

Stupid reply coming…….would you not try and ‘un sync’ the remote locking & see if it starts? In other words, go back to where you first started? Just a thought. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

if issue is with inhibitor you can just put +12v to correct pins in the socket and you should see N and starter should be unlocked.

So if i check the orange wire for 12v
then in park if i check the purple wire i should also have some kind of voltage on there
ill give it a go, bit tight with the battery in there but ill make it work somehow

If you disconnect the C1835 connector at the ECU and check continuity with a multimeter you should find that in Park there is continuity of the wiring (not the ECU pins!) between pins 1, 2, 14 & 17 but no continuity with pins 15 & 16

Just checking that you're definitely testing at the transmission ECU (in the E-box) and not the transfer box ECU (behind the battery)?

you were 100% correct i was checking the wrong one, pulled the cover off and found the right one (always thought it was an airbox) Tested the switch and it does work cycling through shows continuity so issue has to be somewhere else? i wonder if the instrument cluster reports the gearing to the immobilizer and not the gearbox. I was showing 2 unknown errors on the instrument cluster when i scanned it (i assumed it was the 2 lights being bad)
