Advice please - bush replacement

My car feels unsettled when on anything but smooth surfaces. I’ve had the rear sub frame bushes replaced by the garage I bought the car from which improved things for me, but not quite right still.
I have also been advised that the rear upper and front back arm bushes are also worn.

Given the car has covered 155k 115k miles, I am looking to replace all bushes starting with the rear (as it’s worse)

I’m looking to order a bush press kit so I change the rear hub bushes in situ. If I have the bush press kit already, would I be better off buying the rear upper and lower arms still? Or just the bushes? I only ask in case those arm bushes are very tricky, and if I have the arms off anyway then I may as well save myself some hassle?

I’ll also swap the toe control arms while there. Is there anything else I should look to swap while I’m there? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

See here for what is involved:

If you have the money and the new wishbones come with all the bushes fitted, this might save you a lot of pain and time.

Given I have been there, done that, please ask if you need any insight. .

That is an excellent write up Joe90! Kudos Thumbs Up

I’ve read everything and note your lessons learned when you started on the RHS - especially breaking it down into smaller jobs like work on the upper in one go, then lower during another stint, etc.

One thing I didn’t realise is the need to use the IIDTool to deflate the bags. I don’t yet have one as its expensive and have other urgent items to pay for! Are there other options? I.e. disconnect the battery, and loosen the airline pipe to let the air out? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Yes, if I remember correctly, this is possible, once you remove the inner wheelarches you will find the valve block. You should release the air pressure there.

There was an RSW Solutions video on youtube that showed this method, I can't find it now. I think I have something in my gallery also....found it...

note this is for the front valve block, but the rear is a similar approach.

Make sure car is unlocked and keys outside the car before battery disconnection. .

My 2p would be to buy genuine bushes or arms if you don't want to do the job again in a few months.... Thumbs Up Pete

Before you start have you had the wheel alignment checked on a proper 4 wheel alignment checker after the first set of bushes were replaced?
You could be pleasantly surprised at the difference it can make to the drive and it might save you a lot of work

When the rear subframe bushes were replaced the car had a 4 wheel alignment done.
Things have improved with those replaced bushes, but things do still feel loose especially over any rough surfaces. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Thank you RichM63 for that link. Very useful indeed… especially I am currently writing a list of the things I need and their costs!
Rob at Duckworths has been great at pricing up the parts requested so far (rear only at this stage), but your list gives me prices for the things to do later! Thumbs Up

'm pretty sure I have a few bad bushings in the rear of my 06 but just replacing the shocks made a HUGE difference. Less than 2 hours worth of work and it's like a different car.

Thanks gravitylover.
The car went back to the dealer to be looked at with me expecting it to be the strut, but apparently it was fine. They did some form of test which it passed, hence their plan to replace the sub frame bushes.
I didn’t challenge this as the sub frame bush replacement is a fair amount of labour, whereas the strut is relatively simple… so they can do that one for me! Very Happy

I had always planned to change the bushes anyway, and the struts later on down the line too. So I’ll get the rear bushes done (they are worn anyway) and see how the car feels and then plan to do the front bushes or rear struts next.

I also want to service the gearbox and need to do things in the most urgent order as money comes up. Typical, I buy the car and something else in life comes up and costs money I planned to spend on the car! Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

So I am finally at the point of ordering the new bushes, bars, etc ready to get this job done. It’s been a challenging few months financially due to life getting in the way… but nearly there.

I got the car up and wheels off to have a good look at the state of things…
They are looking a bit sorry! Laughing

I’ll be following the excellent posts by Joe90 and Fisha… and intend to tackle the rusty areas on the subframe and arms being refitted.
