Holes in boot behind numberplate - mystery

Just been replacing my numberplate on my new but old 2016 Auto. Found dreaded gaffer tape.

Underneath the gaffer tape are all these holes (clearly from the factory as opposed to being cut in).
My question is: should the holes be plugged and does it matter if water gets in?'

Pics to show.

They are all like that, and they are sealed from the factory with waterproof tape - the trouble is when anybody removes a stick on plate it pulls the tape off as well - the result being that most people just stick gaffa tape over the hole 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Just in case anyone doesn’t already know amongst you very knowledgable lot on here, the best stuff to get rid of all that old adhesive is lighter fluid, -works like a charm with an old credit card scraper! Thumbs Up

Didn’t I read so where that generally, cars have vents here, to stop your ear drums popping when door slammed? Also allows low pressure behind moving car to drag out foul air to stop you dieing of asphyxi-fart-ation.

Not sure about the tailgate, but there are often inner bodywork vents in the rear qtr panels behind the light clusters air.

I always figured that was to allow air out which the blowers at the front of the car had blown into the cabin. I suppose they would also suppress pressure waves. V8 or else ...

Yes WD40 works but leaves a residue? I know lighter fluid is just petrol, but (a) I don’t have petrol in my tank (must be an age thing Rolling with laughter Embarassed ) and (b) a bit easier to dispense a small amount from a little lighter fluid can, I wouldn’t trust myself with 5 litres of petrol near my fullfat Shocked Laughing “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

The holes are there from factory. The insert needed is about £1.60 for a pair. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
