Clunk / thump heard and felt shortly after pulling away

Hi guys
Today I have felt a thump/thud/clunk from the car either as I’m pulling away, or shortly after. It feels and sounds like it’s coming from the rear of the car, and it doesn’t happen every time.
It has happened as I pulled away and not again, it’s happened a few times in a row as I’m gently accelerating, and it has only happened as I’m getting to 20 or so miles an hour.
I’ve never noticed it at speed, and road surface has been good when this has happened - I.e. nothing loose on the surface or stones anywhere.

Today it was several times over the same journey, but only once on the return journey and not at all later when I went for a drive.

My first thought would be rear bushes etc, but I’ve changed them all including the subframe bushes, along with the stabiliser bar links. The only things not touched at the rear is the stabiliser bar itself (it looked good when doing the rear work), it’s mounts (felt no play), airbags (no issues with them) or struts (they are worn and the LHS is shot… but are due to be changed in the next few weeks).

Does anyone have any thoughts what this could be?

The gearbox isn’t working as smoothly as it should be, but this thud doesn’t feel like the gearbox, and apparently the fluids were changed before I purchased the car.

I plan to replace the transfer diff fluids at the front and rear soon, but do not believe this issue would be because of those diffs.

And lastly the front bushes and knuckles need to be replaced (high on my list) and I have heard that the fronts can be felt and heard as if from the rear??? But I am struggling to believe they are the cause.

Oh, and to add…
Sometimes I feel and hear a rumble from the rear of the car like something is lose. Again I would normally blame the bushes, but as they are new all around it can’t be them???

I put it down to the worn rear strut… but now I have this new issue I feel they are likely related. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

I have a similar clunk some times when pulling away & i'm convinced that it's the torque converter on it's way out.

Gearbox works ok, but just have this clonk sometimes.

I’d put money on it being the gearbox, struggling to get into a certain gear, could be just low on oil, especially if it’s been done before, may not have been done correctly.
If it only happens sometimes and not all the time then I’d rule out suspension as with that sort of issue, it’s either fine or knackered, not intermittent. Sounding like it’s coming from the rear is probably the clunk being transferred down the drivetrain.
I get this same clunk, mostly in the morning as I pull out of my road when the car and box are cold, once warmed up it doesn’t do it, so I’m going to get the gearbox oil done at some point 2007 TDV8 Vogue SE

I was planning to get the gearbox refurbed at some point… beyond just the oil changed. But topping up the oil may not be a bad shout! If it is that, then its a quick fix, and if not there’s not much to lose.

What about the rear diff? Could that need some oil, or are they the wrong symptoms? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Keep looking for the cheap stuff. I've just had a quote from Stephens engineering for £2500 +vat to have the gearbox and torque convertor refurbed. I asked if they've done one before and the answer was 'plenty'.

Mine also and getting a gearbox service done later in the week. £2500+ VAT seems quite reasonable for a rebuild considering what’s involved……. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Urgh, £2,500 is a bit much at the moment. I have a few jobs needed on the car, plus it’s Christmas time soon so funds are tied up there!

I think I’ll start with the power flush for now as it’s more like £300 and I can look at a rebuild later down the line of this doesn’t resolve my issues. I would expect a flush would at worse improve things for me? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Have a look at the center bearing on the propshaft, if the rubber support around the bearing is shot it could be causing the intermittent clunk.

All of the above plus check epb. After a night long application sometimes the shoes stick after I've released the epb. Then within a few meters I hear a clunk as the shoes unstick. ----------------

Klg, I hear that clunk when 1st pulling away. The thumping noise I refer to is normally well into a journey so don’t think it’s the epb… Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

The center bearing on the propshaft was shot on my 2012 4.4 TDV8 and I would get a random clumk when driving as the propshaft bearing would bump against the bearing carrier. I also got a rumble when accelerating hardish or when cornering. If that's the problem, you can either get a whole new propshaft or just get the center bearing replaced. The propshaft splits into two so replacing the bearing isn't too difficult a job. I just got the bearing replaced by my local indy mechanic.
Hadd the same problem on my old TD6 FFRR and had to get the whole propshaft as it was an 'aall in one' piece of kit, but managed to get a second hand replacement at a fraction of the cost of a new one.

By any chance, do you know how this "clunk" sounds like?

I have been experiencing this "clunk" at low speeds, especially when the RPM is picking up in the 1st and 2nd gear. Usually this "clunk" is experienced in harmony with the slipping of the accelerator - meaning that the pedal will not depress and slips when this "thump-clunk" occurs.

At higher speeds around 40-50 km/hr, this is non-existent. Only when the RPM drops, will this "slipping effect" occur.

At what mileage did you changed the propshaft bearing? Any other signs when this propshaft bearing is failing?

This clunk is intermittent, and does not happen regularly.
