Additional anti-theft measures

What do people think of additional theft prevention devices?

Have many people bothered to fit them?

I have a CAN-BUS immobiliser on my M4 and was considering putting one on the RR just in case. Are people still stealing the old ones or are they more interested in the newer models now

From what I have read, the cars most likely to be stolen are early classics and L405's, but it would give you peace of mind which is priceless. You also appear to live in an area more susceptible to car theft than my North Wales location, so over-all a good idea, go for it. Thumbs Up

Just who in their right mind would steal an L322? Whistle
Seriously now, a steering wheel lock, as cumbersome as it may be, it's one mighty deterrent.

Kill switch is easy to add and hide
also consider OBD protection of some sort

. Cheers, Greg

My old defender had the ODB wired up so that the positive and data cables were reversed..... Evil or Very Mad

It was pretty scary, you could literally turn off the immobiliser etc with just access to the ODB port.

Greg, you suggest a kill switch ....
What do you suggest should be disconnected by the hidden switch?
On my RRC I killed/switched off the electric fuel pump, (switch in ash tray on back of centre console) car would start, but any more than idle would die. Used a double pole switch, and had a bright flashing LED on dash active when pump off. Seemed to keep repairers guessing, when I forgot to not activate it when I dropped it off at their workshop! 2002 TD6 HSE

tons of options, you can be creative...
-if you have a 4.4TDV8 with the rotary controller you could pluck a cable from the transmission loom.
-there is also a small cable running to the battery
-or how about the push button start switch

. Cheers, Greg

As a comment ref items like Diskloks - which superficially look quite effective :
They cost an efficient thief around 20 seconds max to remove !
There was a video of one being removed as part of a car theft that was recorded via CCTV on a local Facebook group.
The thieves were equipped with a cordless anglegrinder - which had it removed that fast.

However, I'll still carry on using my Disklok - as the 20seconds & the associated noise is possibly enough to make another car more "attractive" to the thieves - as so many owners do absolutely nothing to prevent loss.
I can't believe how many locals near me don't even use faraday pouches for their keyless car keys & then wonder why their car gets nicked Rolling Eyes Paul,

One that takes seconds to cut through with a battery grinder! Think about how quiet your car is with the doors closed, for the 20-30seconds it takes to cut through! Far better to get an immobilizer sir...

A Trap

Unless your insurance company recognizes and gives you a discount or lowers the excess is it worth spending a lot on security?

Quite often dealing with an attempted theft and the damage done can be as time consuming as a complete loss 🤷

Theft isn’t that common statistical so unless a vehicle is irreplaceable Just follow normal safety protocols like never leaving anything in the car especially on display, try and keep off the road, shut gates better still in a shut garage and always lock it etc.

That said If you have your own driveway you can get a drop/fold down bollard… just consider any security device can cost time and convenience which you have to way up, a lot of devices like steering wheel locks, wheel clamps etc just become an annoyance and most people will simply just stop using them.

You can get exactly the same type of unit from ampire.de at a 1/3rd of the cost if you're good with a soldering iron. Christian.

Its an L322, they are very cheap vehicles. Insurance and the standard security is plenty sufficient...I'd rather have them take it to be never seen again than being thwarted in their attempt, and have damage created in the mean time and being uneconomical to repair which they will be at the age they are now.

To me this is unnecessary...
