DIY Headlining help

I have done plenty of headlining in the past including one on my TD6 with no sunroof. I plan to replace the cloth in my latest acquisition, a tdv8 with a Sunroof. Having read up in the workshop manual to find out about the sunroof area it refers to removing screws from the Roof Opening Panel Shield but that's it. it appears to be a link to Topix but I can't get access. Looks like the glass has to come out and a load of screws removed. Please, anyone, know the procedure? 2007 TDV8 VSE

A Trap

I believe these are accessed with the sunroof open and from the top, looking down.

Slide Open the sunroof then you will need to put an allan key in the motor and manually slide the roof further open by an inch or so, then you can access the rear fixing screws holding the headliner to the sunroof aperture... Thumbs Up

Thanks, so no need to remove the glass? What about the sliding screen if I need to remove it to recover that? 2007 TDV8 VSE

Ok I found this info on RangeRovers.net, hopefully, it might assist others in the future, as an ad in another post it says the slide can also be removed after the glass but no specific instruction

"I thought that I would offer some advice for those with sunroofs since it is hard to come by. You have to remove the sunroof to remove the bracket holding the headliner to the sunroof opening.

Here is how to remove the sunroof:
I think this applies to '03-'12. Mine is a '07 HSE. Tilt open the sunroof. On either side you will see a black rubber accordion strip. To detach this, the strip has a slot that slides onto the metal edge up just beneath the glass, it just pushes on, so you can pull the top off. The bottom edge is secured by 2 plastic pegs. Pop the front peg out which will allow you to slide the rear peg out of the slot. To reinstall just reverse the process.
You will now see 3 torx screws on each side. Remove them and lift the sunroof out. Now you will have access to the 15 Phillips head screws that hold the headliner bracket in.
Reinstall:
I screwed this up and had to take the whole sunroof assembly down several times to figure out what was wrong and fix it, so be careful. When you put the glass back in place, there is a plastic spring bar at the rear of the opening. The glass goes on top of this bar and depresses it. Do not slide the glass under the lip of the spring bar like I did, or your sunroof will get locked in the open position when the spring bar catches on the roof as it moves forward. When you replace the 3 torx screws do not tighten them all the way down. After the screws on the glass are loosely in, close the sunroof. Then you can tighten the screws down. Test the sunroof to see if it cycles. If it doesn't loosen the screws and try again. I had to loosen the screws and put forward pressure on the glass before tightening the screws down because the back lip was catching the roof opening. You can "reset" your sunroof by pushing the center button of the controller for about 20secs. Good luck, hope this helps.

FYI, you may have to take down the sunroof assembly to recover the sunroof cover as well, there are two 10mm bolts with washers up front to remove, then unplug the motor in the front. There are 3 torx screws holding the motor on. One is longer than the others. There is a round black cap on the left side of the motor between the screws with a small hole in the center. The hole takes a hex wrench if you want to manually close the sunroof. Before removing the remaining bolts, use a trim tool to remove the wires on the rear of the assembly. Then remove the five 10mm bolts on either side. You will need help to do this. Once the assembly, is down and the glass removed, you can remove the 4 screws holding the sunroof cover on. It's possible that you can do this without removing the assemble after the glass is off, but I thought I would include it here anyways in case anyone needs the info in the future.
Cheers! Good luck!

Today I removed the headliner so whilst fresh in my mind here are a few ads to help.
To remove the sunroof, tilt it fully, on both sides there is a concertina rubber cover that needs to be removed, the top edge just slides into a slot, the bottom edge has two rubber pins that will just pop out with upward pressure. Once removed it exposes 3 Torx screws attaching the glass panel on each side. Remove these and the glass comes out upwards. Now close the sliding shade and from the top it's held on by 4 screws, remove these, push back the shade fully, it can then be eased out easily at a 45-degree angle. Push bach the shade sliders and now you can see all 16 screws fixing the headliner to the sunroof surround.
The Seats do not need to come out nor do the centre pillar trims. All other pillar trims need removing. Front seats moved fully forward and rear seats folded flat and a bit of wiggling and the headliner will come out the back at an angle.
Not too much of a drama after all.
Now the fun of getting all the old foam off and waiting for the new cloth to arrive. I am going to use Faux Suede in cream colour, no more foam to deteriorate.

I have done a few before and one in Suede. 1st time on an L322 with a sunroof. The local re-trimmers are not willing to do the job here in OZ, maybe I could get one to just recover it now it's out but I will DIY. It will be a week or so before I get the cloth delivered. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Thats some crazy headliner, very good look. and really good job.

Have you tried pva on the majority and contact adhesive for the angles/depressions.

Also whats the best method of removing the old foam?

Thanks

Chris

Old foam comes off with a wire brush, it's tedious and messy but that's the best way I have found. The shell is quite tough, it is not damaged by the course brushing. I then paint over it with PVA to seal it and give a hard surface for the new glue.
I have already thought about pva for the bulk and impact adhesive for the indents so that's the way I will go when the cloth gets here, overland from Sydney, it takes well over a week. 2007 TDV8 VSE

I did the recover today, used spray adhesive after a few tests. Blown away by the result, really pleased with the outcome. Still need to do the sunroof blind but that will be simple.
