Getting the hubs off can be costly?

So, quote back is £1300 odd.

Dealer has suggested they pay half but asked me what I want to do.

I like the guy and he seems honest enough to me.. and I'm not an asshole.. but I genuinely don't think I should have to pay any of it really. Was gonna suggest 75%/15% split.

What do you think?

I think if it were me it would hinge on the question, did / should the dealer have been aware of the issues? Brake lines, yep, compressor, maybe, brake shield yes.

Whilst the law is on your side (it's his responsibility) as JayGee has said, the dealer can insist on taking the car back, if the cost of repairs are disproportionate to other remedies (repair or refund). I suppose you need to judge how likely you are to find a comparable car?

I had broadly similar circumstances, in my case though all of the issues would have been apparent to the dealer and I specifically asked what faults there were with the car (fully expecting some) when I first called and was told "I'd like to say there was one, just so I had something to say but to be honest every single thing on that car works as it should". When the dealer apparently couldn't source parts I did so, at a considerable discount, and asked (twice) if he wanted the details to order, never got a reply to that. Had to assume that he had no intention of fixing it so when he said he would refund I accepted. The car is on autotrader right now for £1k less than I paid (so likely hasn't had the issues sorted) but still advertised with the options which were broken (also with the wrong mileage and the wrong MOT date).

Maybe your 75/25 suggestion is a mutually agreeable one? I would have been happy with that in my case but as above, the dealer seemed to have no intention of fixing it so I never got that far.

We've come to an agreement we're both happy with.

Can't fault the dealer, he is really quite a genuine chap. He'll get an excellent review from me despite the hiccups. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

Sounds great!

Perhaps you could DM me the name of the dealer? I'll keep an eye on what he has in stock as part of my search. 2010 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Santorini Black

So, after some umming and aahhing decided to have a proper look at the compressor situation.I'd bought a brand new unit to replace it after two 'specialists' told me that's what was required. It made no difference though as the error didn't go away. Gap IID still came back with the same problem.

So, stripped it all out again and looked at the wiring... And what did I find?

So 20 minutes with some cutters, strippers, solder and heatshrink, I now have working suspension and as a result of that, forward alert, cruise and special programs!

2 specialists having me spend between 550 - 780 to replace a compressor and the actual issue cost me about 35p in materials and 20 minutes of time.

Sad times. But.. Happy times for me and the car! 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

Indeed. There doesn’t seem to be any proper mechanics left, only fitters… to swap out parts, charging each time for their guesswork.

I had similar when my suspension got stuck in extended off road height….. £700 odd for a new compressor… was a blocked exhaust filter in the end. Cost me nothing…

Wiring breaks seem to be a prominent 'feature' of these cars.....
but least you have a spare compressor now! 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Nope, sending that one back for now as I've got other things to be spending money on now.. As I don't know I can trust what the other 'specialists' have said. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

I dare say the compressor would have come in handy one day Laughing

It's not just Range Rovers, or cars in general. My combi boiler got to the point where I had to top up the pressure several times per day. A bit of research & I thought it was the expansion vessel. Quotes were around £250-£300. Thought I'd try re-pressurising it first. The job cost me £8 for a foot pump & even that wasn't necessary (I was going to try to do the job in-situ but in the end had to take the vessel out so I could've taken it out to the car and used my 12v compressor). That was about 2 years ago, in which time I haven't needed to top up the pressure even once.

Sometimes though the specialists are superb. I took a Mini to a specialist when a rattle started, I was pretty sure it was terminal (maybe timing chain guides). The guy started it up, listened for a moment and said "I reckon its a belt", cost £40, which made having to replace the thermostat housing more bearable. 2010 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Santorini Black

The compressor housing cover/box. Where the cable enters the box there's a bit of foam to 'protect' it I guess. It didn't protect anything though! 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

I'll check mine. Noticed quite a few bits of tape on cables in various bits of the car so they must be additions after wiring fails in the production run. Smacks of poor cable management to me or cheap money saving on not using quality dialectic or conduit in exposed areas. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I've noticed the same; not here, but the cables going to the front shocks. What strikes me though is that the taped bits are further back from the usual 'break' point (from what I've seen on other posts). It's entirely possible they're actually just markers/labels rather than joins though. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'
