Yup for a one car household with no friends with EV cars that may be normal. But I think in a household with multiple cars, in 2021, that has all other modern features, being limited to just a 7kW charge is not normal. It just makes the UK lag behind yet again, just as it still does with broadband, or the adoption of PIN and Faster Payments, Mobile Telephony etc.

Todays normal has changed.

We have two EV's and 2 x 7Kw wallboxes (my own design), my youngest has a model 3 and my cousin an ID3. We have always had charge available to guests as well as keeping ours full. Installing 3 phase IMHO seems OTT for 99% of the time.
I am looking at designing a rapid charger for home use for the people that have storage batteries onsite. The cost of the batteries being the killer. BMW i3 Electric Car

I’m glad the government disagrees with you Wink It is coming and it will become mandatory. The question is when. There is nothing OTT about it. Lol I remember when people said the internet is a fad, or bitcoin never catches on etc. When I moved here I could only get ISDN and for residential household it wasn’t even the industry standard for a paired down version.

If everyone thinks it’s OTT progress will be very slow, and that is not good.

Theyre mandating a 3 phase supply should be fitted to every house? I cant see that happening for a very long time to come, it really isnt necessary, nice to have but not essential. BMW i3 Electric Car

The suppliers are now mandating it on new builds.

On our last 4 WPD were supposed to put in 3 phase cabling, but they installed the wrong cables, so we only ended up with single phase. But going forwards all new build will have 3 phase cabling to a 3 phase box, probably only with a single phase tapped off but at least the cable is in.

At the new instal stage it’s no more difficult to put in than single phase…. So May as well for the marginal extra cost.

It is to absorb not only charging of electric vehicles but also to take into account the installation of ASHP heating. If you have a largish property then total capacity can be an issue even with a 7KW. Most will be Ok but…..

8Kw shower
5kw induction hob
4kw oven
7KW charger…..

You only have 24kw to play with on a 100A supply so you have to be a bit careful. Chances are you will never overload the main fuse because you are unlikely to run all of these at the same time, but you can see where they are coming from. it’s why you need to get Supplier approval from the local distributed before having a charger installed and have a load survey carried out by a spark. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

That makes sense and i totally agree at install time its only 2 extra cores on the supply line so minimal costs. We have heatpumps and 2 x car chargers, i do have the wallboxes configured to load shed if necessary just in case, it's happened twice so far, both times when the heatpump is ramping up temperature of the hot water cylinder to kill off bacteria. BMW i3 Electric Car

It's all very well insisting on 3-phase & higher capacity to every new build but a waste of time & effort unless the main grid (132kv) & the sub grids (11kv) are upgraded - who is going to pay for that then ?, hopefully, not me.

I don't expect to subsidise EV owners in the same way I don't expect them to subsidise new/redeveloped fossil fuel stations.

That is the cool thing about infrastructure. It needs to be done in advance, and individualistic short term thinking doesn’t help anyone.

Hence broadband still doesn’t have the reach, nor does mobile telephone and nor will charging.

If the UK doesn’t get its act together it will get further behind in the world.

I'm not being individualistic at all - I just don't see why I should pay for something I will not benefit from or agree with en-masse.

Don't get me wrong, EV's have their place & we do need to pollute less but we do not have to go zero carbon.

If we go to say 50% less carbon emission's (than presently) then nature will take care of the rest - there is no need to go to the expense of diminishing returns.

& what carbon footprint will result in all this infrastructure building & scrapping of vehicles, boilers & other equipment that has years of serviceable life left in it ?

& what if nthey have got it all wrong - they were wrong about nuclear energy - "electricity that will be too cheap to meter" & of course promoting & then demoting diesel.

Far better to slow down a little...............

Sam, you’ve been subsidising the greening of the grid for years through levies on your leccy bills. The next step is to level up between gas and leccy to make ASHPs cheaper. They will do this by reducing the levy on electricity and loading on to gas. Meanwhile, we ignore huge energy resources beneath our feet and insist on moving to an energy source with guaranteed intermittence. You couldn’t make it up…..

OK then, I'll rephrase my statement ;

(or the grid for that matter).

The pendacity here is nearly as bad as RMWeb.

& no, I'm quite happy to subsidise some stuff that does not benefit me directly but not happy to subsidise something that I don't think has really been thought through enough.
