3.0 td6 - worth a shout?

Hi all,

I’m very close to dropping circa £15k on a 4.4 tdv8. Have done loads of research about them and had some really useful info from you chaps on here.. However, I have seen a few great examples of 3.0 td6’s (facelift) recently and wonder if anyone has anything to say about them? A little too old now and will need more love and attention or a worthwhile purchase for a lot less than £15k!

Would be interested to hear your thoughts! Cheers!

Irrespective of how engines etc compare….

I think the big issue is going to be corrosion on the older cars, not brilliant on some of the later ones.

Quite a few older cars are failing MOTs due to structural corrosion near jacking points on the sills.

There is nothing wrong with a TD6, I loved mine, though it was remapped by JE Engineering.

But my 4.4 TDV8 is the longest I’ve ever kept a car…. It’s like an L405 in a different body….

Drive them both… decide what you think fits you best…..

Very different vehicles in some ways. The gearbox is the weak point on a td6, you get the older style dash, mpg is c.22/25 vs 30mpg for the 4.4tdv8, if you go pre 2006 on the td6 tax is cheaper at £340/yr, acceleration is 12am slow to 60 vs sub 8.0 for the 4.4tdv8.

For me I’m getting a td6 to start with until I save up for a 4.4tdv8. Either way check for corrosion on sills and near those rear arches, and service history is key.

Australia 2017 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Santorini Black

I've been the proud owner of a 2005 TD6 for 10 years . LOVE it.

Just coming up to 200,000 kms . Great engine . Drive one, you might be surprised how well it goes.
Only weak point is the GM 5L40E auto, which I have had rebuilt & improved . So put some money aside for a rebuild if it hasn't been done already.
As with any car now getting on to 16 + years old it will need some maintenance . I've just replaced the front shocks/ airbags & rear shocks & all brake pads. More for peace of mind than anything as my suspension fault turned out to be computer related .

No rust over here . Must be all the salt you guys put on your roads.

But now my beloved TD6 has to got as I'm about to purchase a 2017 SDV8 . ( came into some unexpected money ) But still apart from the auto & a few minor niggles I can't fault my TD6 . So don't dismiss them

England 2005 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Zambezi Silver

I have run a 2005 TD6 as my daily drive since February 2019 and it hasn’t missed a beat. I have had to replace the front lower arms and a couple of bushes but that’s it apart from regular servicing.

Big enough for the dogs, dump runs and moving various daughters around the country it’s comfortable and capable. I paid £5,500 for it when I purchased it with 97,000 miles on the clock. It now has 115,000 and last week I was offered £6,500, so it has held its value very well.

If you buy one from a Range Rover enthusiast you will probably be able to pick one up that has no corrosion or has had it sorted out.

Jim

England 2002 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Java Black

Had my 02 TD6 for 11 years now . 2 previous owners and was 123k miles when I got it and now on 167k so don't do a lot of mileage. It has never had a tow bar fitted and is on it's original gearbox . First thing I did was a fluid and filter change when I got it . Some (but not all) first GM boxes didn't have the issue with the alloy blocks wearing and causing issues and it looks like mine is one of them (fingers crossed) . In my ownership it has had the dreaded rear jacking sill corrosion on both sides re fabricated (£2k) , front prop shaft coupling (1k - missed the recall by 1 week and JLR were not interested !) , replaced carbon brushes in the alternator , replaced starter motor and 2 x diesel injectors along with fitting the vortex oil filter mod for the turbo . It is , I found out , tuned with an add on tuning box fitted . Apart from that and routine maintenance and WaxOyl (think of the forth road bridge - never stops lol) it's a fantastic car and stands on a Ctek MXS10 charger in the drive for when it's needed . If anyone is looking at purchasing a potential TD6 , or any car for that matter , I would recommend putting the registration number in the government web site and look at the vehicles MOT history - it can be quite an eye opener Smile

Oh , forgot to add , also had the main thermostat by passed with the renault in pipe mod , rather than strip the engine apart to replace the original Smile
