ALWAYS check the inside of your tyres!!

Rather shaken about this, but think it worth sharing.

The FF was at the dealers for an oil change last week (oil dilution – don’t ask Rolling Eyes ) and I received an urgent call from them.

When they were doing their complementary health check (cynically, I’ve always viewed these as an upselling opportunity!) they discovered my OSF tyre had a two foot long gash on the inside shoulder exposing the cords (see pic) and could have blown out at any time while driving. I can only think that this was caused by the sharp edge of a pothole.

Very frightening to think that a few days earlier I had driven over 500 miles taking the family to and from Liverpool and could have had a major accident at motorway speeds if that tyre had blown.

I’ve always checked the tread and outside face of my tyres regularly for any damage, especially before a long journey, but not usually checked the inside face in the same way. From now on I will be getting underneath and diligently checking the inside of the tyres on all our cars regularly and would encourage everyone else to do the same.

It still scares the hell out of me to think what could have happened. Shocked Shocked

Rather than buy a single new tyre, the garage swapped out the 22's with the brand new set of 21's I had at home. So I now have a set of 22's in the garden, much to SWMBO's delight Laughing Laughing 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

Interestingly a couple of years ago I had similar on both nearside tyres and only found it when swapping from winter to summers glad you caught it before a disaster Thumbs Up

Interesting that your tyre looks like a Pirelli Scorpion.

A few months ago I had a slow puncture in one of my rear tyres (21" Scorpion Verde). I was on holiday in Scotland at the time and took it to a local Kwik Fit who discovered that both rears had exposed wires on the insides and they couldn't (or wouldn't!) repair it. Apart from the exposed wire, the tyres were in very good condition, having done about 33000 miles and had about 6mm tread left. Manufactured end 2016.

I wonder if there's a problem with some of these Pirellis. 2017 SDV8 Autobiography

Guessing you meant 3000 not 33000 Very Happy

I run winters and summers so change wheels every 6 months or so and always have 4 wheel alignment done so every 6 months about 10k miles and there are always adjustments so well worth having it done at least annually I guess

Yes, it's a Pirelli Scorpion. Damage is very much mechanical and not an alignment or uneven wear issue.

What’s the DOT age on the tyre? Looks like failure of the compound rather than damage. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The tread pattern has worn away, and the tyre is cut down the middle of this

If the wear is localised to that one part of the tyre, then I'd agree its a mechanical failure of the tyre construction

However, if that wear is evident around the entire circumference of the tyre, then something has worn it away...
