Secondary battery ripnoff

Hi guys,

Just been exposed to one of the biggest rip offs at a stealer in York that you may be interested in. My car is in for a major service including timing belt. I ask them to check out the start stop function which has stopped working. They wanted £120 to run diagnostics which I reluctantly agreed to. They then called me to say that the problem is the secondary battery and they want a further £426 to replace it. So total cost for the battery replacement £546. I have declined this and have ordered a replacement Exide battery from Amazon for £39.00 and will changed it myself.

My stop start had not worked for about 2 years and when it went in for its 6 year service at a good local indy I asked for a quote for replacing both batteries. They gave me the price and told me that was list on both but they did not charge for fitting, they also said they would only fit OEM as they had had problems when trying less expensive ones.
I now have to start the car and instantly turn the stop start off as it now works perfectly. letters not necessarily in the right order

Thanks for comments. Although stop start is not essential I just think if it’s there it should be working properly. Just fed up with how greedy these damn dealers are. As Stan says I won’t be going back.

The extra drain on the battery after each start (we all know a FF doesn't need that monkey on its back), the extra strain on the starter motor, the extra wear and tear on the engine, the thought knowing that in a traffic light stop, its going to start before the lights change anyway. Pointless arghhhhhhh

Also, when the engine is hot, stopping can cook the alternator and other parts. It’s needed for the EU tests but serves little positive purpose in normal use. MY23 D350 HSE

I'm guessing that stop/start is fitted to most cars now because:

a) you can and it's not too expensive (the customer picks up the bill anyway).
b) in the WLTP test I have no doubt that part of it requires the car to be effectively stationary, so clearly if the engine isn't running it isn't using any fuel. This will have a stupidy disproportionate effect on fuel consumptoin because the test only runs to Tesco and back. Thus all new cars will easily do 500 mpg.

In real life it will make the square root of Censored all difference to fuel consumption, It's a stupid gimmick with all of the pitfalls previously mentioned, its how manufacturers 'legally' fiddle the sytem to have the 'best' performing vehicles, they all do it and it's cynical in the extreme. About what I'd expect from most big business. Drives:
