Jacking

Morning,

Don't know whether I'm being stupid or not but how do you jack the car up?

Spent yesterday trying without success to get my back wheel far enough up to clear the tarmac so I could take it off to do some suspension bushes. I had a sprinter bottle jack under the rear jacking pint and the body was so far in the air the front bumper was practically touching the floor and the rear tyre was still planted firmly on the deck - I cant imagine I need another under the wishbone/hub as well as that would be totally impractical if I got a flat tyre (not generally carrying two jacks in the boot!)

Thoughts?

Please don’t take this the wrong way as I’m only pointing this out from a safety point of view, but if your struggling jacking it up due to knowledge then be very careful attempting suspension bushes as you need to support the suspension in the correct place as you remove certain ones. I taking your doing the outer swivel bushes which is popular on the L322. They’re not too difficult to do if you know what you’re doing but dangerous if you don’t, please be careful and also use proper axle stands Wink

You need to lock the suspension in access mode and open a door to stop the car from attempting to correct the suspension travel. Christian.

No fair point mate always a good thing to consider H&S even for the seasoned DIY'er, maybe I was having a brain fart but I've previously had the wheels off on numerous occasions without issues and even my daughter who is a mechanic for the post office working on their fleet was stumped this time.

it is those bushes as you suspect and I had all the tools required set out ready just couldn't get the wheel/tyre off the ground and as I say it's not previously been an issue.

Maybe that's what I had forget to do (I must be getting old or it was just a brain fart...) we're scheduled for another attempt next Sunday so I'll start off by dropping it and leaving the door open Laughing

If you can get it something like this with one stand under the subframe and one supporting the lower suspension pan you on a winner, if you use a decent lift trolley jack you should be able to get off the floor no problem, if not you can put it on a stand while using a block to give the jack more lift. Locking the suspension wont make any difference as its the articulation that’s causing you the issue. Thumbs Up

that looks about right, I think the issue was In my case the jacking point on the body didn't lift it as the weight of the wheel/tyre just pulled down on the air bag/frame etc so use the trolley/jack stands as per your picture.

But this being the case how do we all fair if we have a flat in normal life? (call the AA/RAC Wink )

As long as your shock absorbers are connected they will eventually stop the wheel dropping when they hit the stop, but it is a lot of travel before it does. The car jack will lift it but seems to go for ever. Use a trolley jack which is much easier.

indeed, I was amazed just how much travel there was (thought the extended travel on my disco was good but I might even win the twist-off competition with the full fat at the next land rover show Wink )

The central rear jacking point is quite high up. A sprinter jack on the outer plastic jacking sockets will lift the rear tyre well clear for wheel changing purposes but as I found you then have no way of putting an axle stand anywhere if you want to do anything repair related. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I've read through a lot of posts about this and seen the RAVE instructions but haven't been able to find a good picture that confirms where to place the jack and jack stands to raise the front. Here's a photo I took yesterday noting where I plan to put the jack and stands. (I've removed the plastic cover panel to see the subframe.)

Can anyone comment on whether there is a better place to locate the equipment to raise the front?

Your picture shows where I jack mine up, using the crossmember.

The only problem is removing the undertray as it hinges down from the back where you would place the jack and the car wont get high enough on its own to facilitate removal. Christian.

Thanks. Does the under tray really not come off when the car is on the ground? I figured that I could pull it off and left it on only because I was taking a quick photo and wanted to be able to reinstall it more easily.

I put my undertray on ( it was missing when I bought it) with the suspension in off road height and the drivers door open to stop it going down. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
