Brakes : What’s this green tube?

Please would someone be able to say what this small green tube is. It appears to be going to the brake callipers on the front near side ( passenger side ).

There does not seem to be an equivalent on the front Off side ( Drivers side ).

I noticed it was badly kinked and may even be torn. I’ve done a running repair for the time be but am concerned about having a developing problem as I’m off on to Cornwall on Friday ( 500 miles return ).

Any advice much appreciated.

Pad wear sensor wire. They’re about 20 quid for a new one and plug into the black plastic box in your picture then are a push fit with a small metal clip on the brake pad, they are on one side only hence o/s missing Thumbs Up

Thanks @Diesel-Dave. Is the green tube a protective sheaf or is that the whole thing ? It seems so flimsy that I wonder if there is a electrical wire inside the PVC tube. TDV8 4.4 2012

Wire inside, once pad wears down to the wire, it goes open circuit and brings in your dash light

Yes its a protective cover, there is a wire in there but its only a sensor wire, IE when the sensor on the pad touches the disk the ECU gives you a message you have worn pads. I never like to say you’ll be ok to leave it with brakes, however the worse you could get is a false worn pads warning, or none at all if broken then the pads touch the disc with a scoring noise as in the old days.

I think the way the sensor works is that the car needs to detect a complete current through it.

Contact with the disc usually breaks / damages the end of the sensor, and breaks the circuit.
Continuing until you are metal on metal will see the end of the sensor ground to dust - the yellow warning triangle will still be on.

Once you get the brake warning light, you will need to change the sensor, as it’s connectivity has been broken
Driving without a sensor will give you a brake warning light (well, mine did)

You should be able to re-use a sensor where the warning light has not come on. As it’s circuit has not broken.

Mine was fine with one of the sensors off for about a month - no warning light or anything.
