Exhaust mods?

Has anyone had their exhaust modified, baffles removed, back box binned etc? I’ve seen some YouTube modifications and I’m interested in having it done, I’ve got the supercharged and want a bit more v8 rumble, any guidance would be appreciated

Hey Fozzie, if you do delete a box or go down the sports exhaust route, you have to do a before and after video like the ones found on YouTube, I bet the difference would be amazing!! Thumbs Up

I know the E60 M5 boys drop the rear boxes, cut a flap in the top of box, empty the baffle material out, re-weld the flap shut and refit. Looks totally stock but sounds more aggressive.

Took the rear box of mine years ago... didn't stay off long as the noise, although nice is just too loud..

I changed the rear box for one from an Audi S3, same shape as a Rangie, just smaller but this was more for increased off road capabilities than anything else

From my build thread...

Being the tight git that I am I decided to sort it with second hand parts, well, some of it, found a rear box from an Audi S4 that was smaller in every direction than the original one, best bit was it's less then 3 1/2 inches top to bottom and it's made of Stainless Steel...

Went to an exhaust place I know and persuaded them to let me use their bender and stretcher so knocked up a few bits and bobs...

When you cut off the rear box you end up with this...

I then cut them back to here and added two slip joints, also took about 5" out of the length of the pipe so the bend in front hugs the diff a bit better, reducing the angles and the pipe length to keep the new box as tight as possible up to the rear subframe...

Propped the new box in place with a transmission stand, offered the pipe back up, made a 2 into 1 and tacked it up in place, then removed it and welded it all up apart from the slip joints...

Bent up two new mounts out of stainless bar, welded them on then cut the old tips of the FF box to finish off this one and have the exhaust facing down...

It's much further out the way than the old one, should be fine off road and the best bit is it's nearly as quiet as the original box, the awful drone at motorway speeds has gone...

Gave it the once over with a wire brush in the grinder, might clean the rest of the paint off it and just leave it like that.....

I'm happy and the neighbours are talking to me again... Thumbs Up Pete

These pipes were on mine when I bought it.
Stainless, allegedly an Overfinch exhaust system.
I must admit it does sound nice though!!

I've just installed a pair of exhaust bypass valves on my 5.0L SC. It sounds incredible when the valves are open. But as soon as you hit the switch, the valves close and it goes back to factory quiet.

That way you can enjoy both modes depending on your mood. Having a permanently loud exhaust may sound cool at first, but after a while it can get tiresome with that constant drone noise.

Switchable valves are the way to go.

Where did you get the bypass set up from?

Off eBay. I bought a pair of these valves

https://www.ebay.com/itm/144265754854?ssPa...2749.l2648

These clamps

https://www.ebay.com/itm/124329716038?ssPa...2749.l2649

This switch

https://www.ebay.com/itm/353099063586?ssPa...2749.l2649

I didn't choose the remote control valves that a lot of these kits come with, I prefer a hardwire solution.

I also stripped the paint of the rear silencer and polished with with stainless steel paste.

Ah, of course you're in the UK.

I'm a Brit expat living in the Dom Rep. I do most of my shopping from eBay USA which is then forwarded to the DR.

I checked on eBay UK and here are the valves I bought. They come from China, but seem pretty good quality. The Y piece is stainless steel and the welds look very well done. The actuators are electric. I can't speak for reliability as I only finished the install yesterday.

I should have changed the logo on the switch from exhaust tips to smily face! 2010 L322 5.0l Supercharged
