You’ll see from a previous post that I recently installed the Navtool box in my 2008 Vogue. It’s amazing!

… and at the moment it has a free wireless CarPlay update. Not to be sneezed at!

The hardest part was getting the aux cable under the carpet from the boot and that must have taken me 30-40 minutes! The installation is quilter simply plug and play.

Do NOT go off the install guide on YouTube as that’s out of date and talks about cutting wires and soldering etc (which I was all set up to do). This is literally plug and play AFTER you have connected the box to your PC to set it up for the correct car.

Having had it for a week it’s flawless.

Car automatically goes in to CarPlay mode but all the other features are there. Press the 4x4 button and you’re in that screen. Press the nav button and you’re back in CarPlay. If you really want your onboard sat nav, just hold the nav button and likewise to return.

It honestly feels like it’s part of the car. The only thing I had to do was turn the master volume down in the settings as it was distorting but other than that it sounds great over the logic 7 system.

It’s $600 so including the 4m twin phono to 3.5 stereo I bought of Amazon it’s set me back less than £500. With the wireless connection you obviously don’t need a usb extension which you’d otherwise install with the phono.

Changing screens to different apps was a bit tricky but you press the dots at the bottom of the screen - just make sure it’s the *very* bottom…

Absolutely is. Sam (YouTube) put one in that requires dismantling the head unit to put a new circuit board in. That was 2010 MY anyway… In my previous car (E220) I put an android head unit it which was quite a task and required a plug in dongle to give the CarPlay. It was ‘ok’ and I had it 2 years, but that was nowhere near as good or as easy to install as this. Seriously, the hardest part is routing the audio cable to the back of the centre console from the boot. Tym

I also installed one of the Android units in my Mercedes C Class when I had it. The unit was great, super responsive, larger crystal clear screen but the install was an !

But, that was £350 for an entire head unit with high resolution screen, WiFi hotspot, GPS and everything else. £500 seems very steep for a Carplay add on on an old low resolution screen? 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I was weighing up what I needed from the unit, how easy the install was and the price.

My head unit for the E was about £500 plus the £80 for the wireless CarPlay dongle. As you say, whilst it looks good, the install was a pain, *and* with the CarPlay being reliant on a third party product, it wasn't 100% reliable.

The Navtool is really easy to install, still allows access to the factory unit, provides what I need for music/navigation etc. and was still cheaper than the Android units, which I appreciate are now cheaper than when I bought mine. This took 45 minutes to install whereas the Android to a good chunk of my day!

And in all reality, as a drive, how much time do you spend actually *looking* at the screen? Is the lack of super hi res really a negative? Tym

Thanks for posting this. I've just picked up an '07 L322 and I'm trying to solve the BT streaming "problem".

Does NavTool allow track control (Prev/Next) through the steering wheel? I'm guessing it doesn't because the sound is playing through the Aux input.

If not, have you solved this in some way, e.g. bluetooth buttons?

Duh! Of course! I should have realised that!

I've been so preoccupied with finding a solution that didn't mean touching the phone, I forgot that Android Auto (in my case) has a Next button on the screen. My other car works with hard stereo controls, so I never use it.

So far, I've ordered one of these and a phone dock:

Planning to run it back to the Aux in the back, then have the buttons near the handbrake. I like the idea of full Android Auto though. I'd seen mixed reviews of NavTool from a couple of years ago, but your post has really got me reaching for the credit card.

I bought the Bluetooth thing before I’d picked the car up to make sure I had streaming. Then within a day or so bought the Navtool. I’ve only used the CarPlay side of it so can’t comment on the android auto but if it’s half as good as the CarPlay it will be great. Well worth shelling out for just make sure it’s right for your MY. Tym

There is a twin phono to jack that comes with it but it’s nowhere near long enough to reach the back of the centre console. You can either use a 3.5 extension (hmmmm) or use a longer cable. I used this.

As long as you used the code for free wireless on the Navtool, that’s all you need. If not, you’ll also need a usb extension of 4-5 metres. Tym
