Strange EAS Fault

Evening All

For the past few weeks I've been chasing an SRS airbag fault on my 2003 4.4V8, and today replaced the disconnect lead unit on the battery which cured it. Reconnected everything up and started to go for a test drive, when my a**e shot into the air and nose hit the deck!

No sign of a leak and reservoir pressure is around 188psi, but the height won't change and there aren't any error codes on the IID tool or EAS faults on the dash. I can't work out what's going on, would a failed height sensor do this, but not give any fault codes, or is it likely to be 'air' fault somewhere? Any advice gratefully received...

The IID tool shows the calibration values in grey and the current in white, quite a difference! David

Yes, after I reconnected the battery I did the normal lock-to-lock calibration and IID tool and error code cancelling. I also tried removing and replacing the negative lead to see if that would 'reset' the system but no joy.

I think tomorrow I might fully disconnect the battery and touch the + and - leads to try and eliminate any lingering issues, but with no fault codes, I'm not convinced this is the cause. David

Can you drive it above 12mph? the logic should force a levelling as it will force the front end to go to standard height, if that works, then increase to 31mph which should bring the back down to standard. I take it the EAS height LED's by the switch are operative and not flashing?

I had some problems with the EAS fault and found it to be some sticky O-rings in the main valve block...changed these out and working perfectly. Mr. Green
Hope you can solve the problem and it doesn't go on for too much longer. 2003 RR L322 4.4 ltr Auto Zambezi silver Custom paint

The brass exhaust silencer nozzle at the compressor could be blocked. Temporarily remove the silencer to see if the system behaves.

Thanks all for your thoughts. Current situation:

1. Battery disconnected with +&- touched and went for a short test-drive up to 20mph. No movement from the front, and it's still on the stops.
2. EAS LEDs steady in normal height, and then flash when selecting access mode or off-road height, but don't stop flashing until I return the system to normal ride height.
3. Rear moves up and down, although the near side is now higher than the offside.
4. Brass silencer on the compressor is clear and air being released without a problem.
5. Compressor is charging the reservoir up to the correct pressure.
6. No movement at all from the front, which suggests to me that the seals in either the front valve block or part of the main block have failed. No idea which though, so think I need to check and replace the seals on both and/or replace the front with a second-hand unit. David

If you crack off the inlet to the front block and there's a constant hiss of air (not just the line emptying), then it's the front block that needs attention. It may be easier to test with a soapy water spray.

With the rear now behaving oddly, it may well be that some desiccant dust has got into the lines and is causing the valves to stick.

I had something similar with my old 2002 off roader after drowning it in a Welsh river, I used the IID to " deflate all" a few times then re fill and do it again, maybe that was stuck valves, the water in the system didn't help...!!

After several fill ups no more water was coming out and it started to behave itself, I then dried the dryer properly which you won't have to do....

Worth a try, it may come back into life... Thumbs Up Pete

Thanks for your help Pete/Pheonix

Deflated and inflated several times and went through the valve test sequence. Got it back to the correct height and took it for a test drive, during which it finally threw a fault code:

0x64 Articulation Validity Fault

At the same time, I had a look at the live height readings and the only value not changing was the front right, so it looks as if I have a duff height sensor (nor did the value change when I went through the whole deflate/inflate sequence after the test drive).

Is there any much to be gained by buying the genuine replacement for around £160 rather than an OEM (alleged) version for £80? David

Glad you're getting to the bottom of it - before you go buying bits, are you sure the link rod is attached and articulating properly? you've probably already checked but it's a question worth asking.

If it were mine, I'd go with the OEM option - after checking how much Duckworths could do a genuine one for, if it's sub £100 then I'd get a genuine one.
